VCDS (VAG-COM) codes and programmable options for Golf Mk7

^^^ Jozh: G'Day! It's always difficult when responding to questions about aftermarket stuff because the available products and their impact on the car varies so greatly! So, I'm really guessing but here's my logic:

If your car originally had incandescent headlights and if you just did a physical install with LED fittings, then likely the BCM (Body Control Module - the thing that lives @ address hex09 on your CAN bus) still believes that it needs to operate incandescent DRLs. Of course this is an abject lie because the BCM should be controlling LED lamps! :facepalm:

I'm not sure if you are aware (forgive my impudence if you already know this stuff), but the BCM on a mk7 is quite a sophisticated beast - it has the facility to operate lamps both in digital and in decimal mode. The latter approach is normally used for incandescent lamps and the former is normally used for LEDs.

So - totally as a guess, why not try telling the BCM to operate LED type DRLs? If you agree, then try this:

• ENG116940-ENG115948-Leuchte4TFL LB4-Lasttyp 4 (left-side DRL)
• ENG116941-ENG115967-Leuchte5 TFL RB32-Lasttyp 5 (right-side DRL)

These are the "leuchte-channels" that tell the BCM what type of DRL lamps it needs to control. If my guess is correct, the current settings on your car will be 9 - allgemeine Glühlampe 27W; auch H15

Try changing the settings for these channels to 1 - LED Tagfahrlichtmodul Versorgung (of course you will need to enter the magic number 31347 as the security code for the BCM before you make the change)

Hi Don,

No replacement of the control module inside the glove box.
My headunit is not the MIB version, hence there is no control module inside the glove box.
Its a stand-alone radio by itself.

Btw, what do you mean by re-implement the tweaks?
I need to go to CCEM, adaptation and re-do all the settings?

hmm............... OK - your after-market addition is well beyond my feeble understanding of mk7 operations! I've no idea how J794 talks to your new head-unit - but clearly it's different to the standard MIB protocols where the "smarts" reside in the control module in the glove-box and the head unit is a simple screen (I believe that the comms between the two items are CAN based messages - perhaps your new "radio" doesn't accommodate these particular CAN messages?).

Has the retrofit resulted in any DTCs in your auto-scan report?

Unless someone else here has fitted the same aftermarket radio and they have found a solution to your exact problems (possible, but improbable- I suspect) , I suggest that you contact the equipment manufacturer

Thanks Don, ill give this a go when I get a chance :) Correct car had halogens, the new headlights can take halogen or led for the lowbeams. the DRL are leds. VW Golf MK7 - Sequential Projector Headlights - Supernova Lighting If I dont have any luck with changing to LED, what else can I try? The replacement radio is this below.
5GG 035 280 B - Google Search

Its actually a VW product.

Surprisingly there is no DTC after I swap this radio in.
Hence the curiosity.

Do you mean I disable the menu items via VCDS and then re-enable it again to check if the menu will reappear in my new player?

I too have recently purchased and installed these particular Headlights that Josh has mentioned. Although I can't help with his problem, my question is for Don, who I've seen as kind of a living legend when it comes to coding across many forums.

Firstly I have a Mk7 Comfortline which, as previously mentioned, originally came with Halogens. I have installed Supernova's LED headlights and everything works great out of the box. Sweeping sequential turn signals and all. Now, just to make sure we're on the same page, the light selector switch goes: 0 (off), Auto, Parkers(?), Dipped Beams.

When in the off position, the DRLs are on, full brightness.
When in the Auto position, the low beams are on, regardless of time of day.
When in the Parkers(?) position, the DRLs are on, full brightness.
And dipped beams, normal low beam again.

The factory halogens would, in the Auto position, have a DRL on during the day and automatically switch to low beam at night.
I am looking to regain this functionality with the LED headlights - Full brightness double "U" DRL during the day, automatically switching to low beam at night.

I have tried the "Tagfahrlicht nur in Schalterstellung AUTO" command and set it to active, but as far as I can tell, this only makes it so that in the "0" (off) position, then all lights are off (no DRL). With the Auto position still resulting in low beams during the day.

I saw your advice to change the Lasttyp's to LED, and will try this tomorrow, as it's night now and all testing is moot.

whisp: "Don, who I've seen as kind of a living legend when it comes to coding across many forums" - pleeeeeeease don't say that - it's entirely incorrect and this particular legend (which I am NOT) most certainly does have feet-of-clay. I'm just an average Joe trying to make sense of how the good Burghers in Germany build MQB platform cars. The word "synergy" is a much over-used term these days - but it applies well in these forums because the (often small) contributions of individual members (like me) invariably results in the whole being greater than the separate parts! The true value is in the forum community, it's not in the participation of individual forum members!!

But enough of the hagiography - because I'm about to disappoint you: I don't know!!

As I have already said, 3rd party aftermarket headlights vary so much and the installation practices of their buyers can result in weird effects (no offense intended).

I assume that the auto-scan report on your car does not contain any errors and that you have made no changes to the code/adaptation-channels on any control modules following the retro-fit. If this is correct, I'm tempted to suggest (and by this I mean -I guess) that the behavior of the fittings is related to a wiring/physical-connector problem. Again, as a total guess, I suggest that you look at the interfacing connectors and confirm (i.e. look CAREFULLY at) the integrity of the pin contacts on both headlights - particularly the earth pin(s) on the connectors

Haha I appreciate your modesty. I only mentioned it because in the lead up and aftermath of purchasing and installing Head/tail/licence plate lights, I did a lot of research and you kept popping up everywhere. Always with helpful information.

I'm pleased to say the issue has been resolved. I had some time this morning and translated all of the options under:
Central Electrics 09
Adaptation
Daytime Running Lights.

I then proceeded to systematically go through all the options and try certain combos, but in the end, I just had to select the second "Daytime running lights" for the option "fahrlicht bei tag - Driving light during the day"

Hopefully this will help someone else out down the track.

^^^ Well-done (my assumption regarding no changes being made to the control modules was clearly incorrect)!
Anyhow, in reciprocity for your kind words - allow me to elevate your standing (IMO) in the forum to "legend-status" :banana:

but seriously, alas it's a bit more complex than just picking the "daytime running light" option in the fahrlicht bei tag adaptation channel. I'm not sure if you are aware, but the same dichotomy (i.e. 2 x "daylight running light" options) also appear in the Lichtfunktion settings for the Leuchte-set for the actual lamp. As you probably already know, there are 8 x Lichtfunktion (i.e. A,B,C.. H) channels in each of the 35 x Leuchte-sets in the BCM


After many attempts using my test bench (my "virtual mk7") to fathom the complexity of how the fahrlicht bei tag adaptation channel works, I found that there is an interplay with this adaptation channel and the particular version of "daytime running lights" that is chosen in the Lichtfunktion setting

Here's a more detailed explanation that I made some time ago for the RT forum that describes the full matrix of options:

I guess that you could try the 2A-2B option in the picture with the LED headlights - but this is untested (for obvious reasons)
