I have a 016 Golf with the discover media , that comes with CarPlay. When you press and hold the VC button on the steering wheel it activates SIRI. I didn't pay to have the VW Voice Control activated.

Yeah this is what happens when you have CarPlay active. The VC button engages when pressed but still get the error message on speedo. It works which is great but I can easily just say "Het Siri". I'd prefer there to be a mute button.
Fact of the matter is when an album has finished playing or even if I want to hit pause whilst GF is chatting to me, I could use this button and it would either jump to next album or would stop so my GF could continue chatting my ears off. Lol
Gotta be a way to code it to function like one???
I don't like to give up easy.

Well I have completely figured how to make the infotainment colours customizable with multiple colours that are changeable through the infotainment system. With my Passat R it also changes the colours in the digital dash. So stoked to get this sorted again.
I think we are getting our wires crossed.
MIB1: no Siri, but has dealer option to enable VC. If it's not active, then acts as mute button.
MIB2: has Siri, also has dealer option to enable VW VC. (Short press activates VW VC, long press for Siri)
What we are trying to work out with MIB2 is if VW VC is not activated, does a short press also work like a mute button like it did on MIB1. That's your original question right?
We know your MIB2 doesn't work as a mute button, I was asking the previous poster to confirm his car behaves the same as yours to get a larger sample pool.

Fair call.
For me a long press is no different to a short press. It will always activate Siri when CarPlay is activated. An error will display long or short press regardless if CarPlay is activated as well.
No mute function at any point.
I fear anyone with the MIB2 will no longer have this feature. Unless there is coding to disable the Siri VC.
We need a coding guru

Ahh ok, I understand now.
Just for your information, on my MIB1, I also get the stupid error message on the MFD, but it mutes my audio, so I don't mind.
As a side note, have you tried holding the volume down switch? Not perfect but should achieve similar results?

Yeah I have tried that but it's annoying because for one you can't achieve the same volume once you bring it back up again. Holding down is easy coz it just turns off but holding it back up + means I have to time it so it doesn't start peaking loud music.
Also I have a work phone that isn't Bluetoothed to my stereo and sometimes I might get a call. A quick mute unmute I can check if it's ringing or not.

To those who know about VCDS, can I please ask 2 questions?
1. With having a JB1/JB4 on the car, if I do a VCDS scan, it is supposed to report no faults if it's all running well?
2. I did a scan and it worked normally. Then I did it again and it produced lots of errors:
