change the manifold to a standard golf one
hi all,
im currently running a 32/36 weber on a passat manifold on my golf, however i managed to pick up a 32/34 weber designed specifically for a mk1 golf, ie it's supposed to go straight on. the current weber needs work so using the new one would solve my problems.
the problem is, that it wont bolt to the passat manifold as the stud pattern is different, has anyone else come across this?
here is a pic of what I mean.....
the base gasket is from the existing weber, see how two holes dont line up?
how do i overcome this problem
is there some sort of adaptor plate i can buy.....
any help is greatly appreciated.

change the manifold to a standard golf one
ok, why? a standard manifold has 2 bolts for the single barrel carb?

I can't see that fitting to a standard manifold.
where have you found that this is meant to be a standard item for a golf!??
Yes, you could get an adapter made up, shouldn't be too hard. would most likely be a custom job
though I'm not sure of the point exactly. Is this 'new' weber actually new or reconditioned, it would be alot of work to go through to find out that this 'new' weber needs work as well. (if that makes sense)
i didnt say this is a standard golf item, it is a weber specifically designed for a golf, ie the throttle linkage/ jetting/ electric choke, are all designed to hook up in place of the standard single barrel carb.
i got it of US ebay for real cheap, the carb looks like new and everything works as it should, it is a genuine weber made in italy.
might have to look into some sort of adapter.

Ah right. I was confused as to exactly what you meant as designed specifically for golfs.
It's possible it was designed for a US golf, maybe a 1.7L, that may have had a different manifold. I'm not sure though.
Pm Preeny, he's a machinist, and could probably whip something up, or atleast point you in the right direction.
Looks a bit like the weber that was part of the old "Red Lion" replacement induction kits the yanks were flogging years back.
After spending a whopping big $199.95 USD way back when Adam was a boy, the one i had delivered was infact a weber from a 1300 CC fiat. They had cut the secondary vacuum spring and chucked some different jets into it to "try" to make it run.
Long story short, took many trips to the dyno to get it anywhere near the std Solex set up.
That kit came with its own inlet manifold, which was a pretty good casting by all accounts. long since left my hands tho....
Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

It looks a bit like a DATRA weber, they were fitted to the alfa sprints back in the 80's in Australia. There is also a DATRM, manual choke. Their stud pattern is slightly smaller than the normal twin barrel downdraft webers. They are a good carbie in that the float is in front of the carbie, so no fuel surge when going around corners hard. The DG webers have the float on the side as does the TS Solex because their motors are not sideways. Surge was a big problem with the TS Passet Solex carbie hence I was looking for one with the float in the front. From reports, surge isn't a problem with the DG webers however.
I bought a DATRA way back when and had to elongate the holes in it to make it fit a TS manifold. Worked well and did about 400,000k with it. Still OK, as well, shafts nice and tight. The weak point are the two auto choke mounting screws, they come loose, strip after a few years. One day you will be driving along and the fast idle from the auto choke will stay open because a screw has fallen out and stopped the throttle returning.
thanks for the extra info, after hours of internet research i have discovered it will bolt on to a pierburg 2e2 manifold of a mk2, so im off to loons tomorrow to pick one up. hopefully it'll do the trick.
and yes you're right about the fuel surge, currently running a 32/36 dgv and its a problem with turning right whilst decelerating. you learn to change your driving style to compensate though.
cheers
john
