hard to know without testing it. but sound like it
Given your recent electrical issues, it could be your clutch cable in it's new role as a battery lead got real hot and got a bit longer.
Another sympton of poor earthing I'm afraid.
Fix the earth, fit a new clutch cable. I've got a s/h one here you can have.

It could be the pressure plate but you can check the 'finger' without removing the box which is handy.
Get a drip tray lined up and prise out the green cap. Start at the top cos you don't want to damage it at the bottom cos oil will leak out all over the place if you do.
Once it's out some oil will come out for sure but the more you jack up that side of the car the better.
The arm outside the box that the cable goes onto is connected to a shaft that runs into the end of the box. Half way along the shaft in the middle of the access hole is a steel 'finger' it looks like a comma , with a splined hole in it. The shaft goes through that.
If it has split then the shaft just rotates inside it and the finger doesn't push on the bearing and push rod to move the cover.
This reminds me that there is a plate in the middle of the cover held in with a big circlip. It has been known for them to collapse too.
I'd check the finger first cos it's a lot less effort initially.
YOU CANNOT WELD THE FINGER BACK TOGETHER IMO. I tried and it split again straight away. Get one from a scrap box.
Good luck and keep up informed.

Try the other cable you've got first, it's only a five minute job to change it over.
If that doesn't fix it then yes, the box will probably have to come out.
hvw100's advice is for a 5 speed box, I think you're running the 4 speed atm? I'd have to look up how the throw out bearing works in the 4 speed.
