day off so took a few more pictures..
these look pretty bad
roof channel
under bonnet above water channel (next to bonnet hinge)
A-Pillar
I think will be getting onto these today with any luck, don't particularly want it to get eaten
hmm well this is the case on both sides, accept this one has the bog where as the other just has surface rust without the cracking.
I also found some last nite in the corner of the water channel under the bonnet.
this has eaten right through the metal![]()

Maybe it has had roof racks?
I have seen that sort of rust in the rain trays quite often, especially in Australian built Golf 1’s. What year is your golf Speci?
I agree with the others though, sand the crap out of it, cover in por15, then paint.
The one in the corner of the bay near the bonnet hinge does not look too bad but I am no expert.
yeah i think it has too, tho there is some more in the channel towards the a-pillar
Yeah i agree, it doesn't look too bad so the anti-rust should hopefully sort that for the time being.
it's a 76 swallowtail so yeah is Aus built.
is por15 a bog?

Hi mate, POR15 is a anti rust product as opposed to a bog, I think I may be telling you the wrong product though as I don't think you paint over it...
Heres some info from the website anyway:
What is POR-15?
POR-15 is the product that changed car restoration permanently and is used by manufacturers world-wide to protect their factories from rust and corrosion. POR-15's non-porous coating keeps moisture away from metal permanently. The secret lies in POR-15's curing process. Most paints dry through evaporation, but POR-15 dries faster when moisture is present.
Now add to that POR-15's incredible hardness, toughness, and flexibility and you have a coating that is practically indestructible.
POR-15 is great for auto restoration, but it's also a state-of-the-art concrete preservative and floor coating.
Try the many uses of POR-15 and you'll understand why this incredible product is now sold in 52 countries around the world!

I've got a similar issue in the gutters of my golf that I need to attend to ASAP. So keep us updated.
What did you use for the initial rubbing back?

yeah it's not a nice site.
so far i have taken back the rust with some mildly course (spelling maybe wrong) sandpaper in a thing wood block, a flat-b file for the worse bits. I'm borrowing a small version angle-grinder in the next few days and will make a proper start on the ridding the rust.
personally i would get onto any roof tray rust (or any other for that matter) asap because in this case it has cause the tray to crack all the way along the outta seem and has rusted in there too.. it's really tricky to get to also.
Can take some pics of the repair process if anyone is keen?
Yes, pics would be good, thanks.
I think mine has been bogged up too at some point, but i've had the car for 4 years and the rust has appeared gradually (curse not having a garage!!!). I'm hoping it's not to bad underneath but I guess that's rarely the case with rust![]()
