OK so I finally did it

My GTI has been in the wars this year, it's not that I've been unhappy with it, but it has cost me some $$$. I know the crap we went on with Petrina months back about the track wrecking our cars. Whilst I still say the race track doesn't wreck them, it does push the cost of keeping them on the road a bit higher.

This week thanks to Seb, I've had my clutch & single mass flywheel done. I had a stuffed bush for the control arm replaced. I've also finally had my car flashed I went for Unitronic that Seb is now doing, and so far it's incredible. Everyone says it's like a new car and blah blah blah, and of course they're right. When you first pick up your car, your like yeah it's not bad for a 2 door hatch. But when it's flashed, it's a proper turbo car now. You get that kick, and instantly become addicted. The only thing I'm now worried about is license and fuel consumption

Unitronic from Seb only cost $880, which is cheap as far as I know for a flash. My car's done 125,000km now and lately I've had friends ask if I'm close to a new car, but I'm still pretty happy with this one. Ultimate test is the times it does at the track and the new top speeds. Hope to see some of you Sydney guys at the dyno day. Should be interesting to see my result.

    Cheers
    Paul

haha, finally! Well done. Three and a bit years into my polo ownership and I still haven't got it chipped. Have finally started a fund though. Might be enough to convince me to hang on to it for a few more years instead of wasting money on a new car.

Plus my rex driving mate from work keeps nagging me to do it.

I'd be interested to see how much of a difference it makes to your lap times once you get a chance to get back out there.

Without starting a chip war, what made you go with unitronic to the other handful of tuners? I hadn't given that one a consideration, only due to pure ignorance.

When's the next track day for you? I too am looking at tuning and throwing a rear sway bar on before the next track day (probably november). If that could contribute to dropping my times around 1 to 1.5sec a lap (QR), I'd be chuffed, but not sure if it's realistic.
Track Car: 06 Polo GTI Red Devil mkII

Gone but not forgotten: 08 Polo GTI

Nope, not sure if you can buy a separate unit that plugs in. As far as I can see your paying, what is it these days? $1500-$2000 to be able to turn it off via the indicator stalk. This is not a chip war thread, but that's just too expensive for me.

The money. I don't care bout turning it off or having multiple tunes, I just wanted a simple tune. Anyone who pays more then $1500 for a tune is crazy. Having said that, tunes like GIAC and APR are proven long term. So in that respect I guess I've taken a risk.

Well someone at Oran Park has screwed CircuitClub and gave their day to a higher bidder That was going to be my next day at the end of November, now I need to go find another track day there. I might also do Marulan at the end of October, however it's the same day as the dyno day

Absolutely agree and appreciate your opinion. I've done piggyback ecu and custom dyno tune for that coin. I too am weighing up the proven longetivity of those you mentioned against 2 others. More research is required.

At the end of the day, if the tune ruins your engine, I don't think fronting to APR and asking them to buy you a new one is going to yeild much in terms of Warranty.

I guess its peace of mind...

Yeah I wouldn't ever expect a warranty claim to get very far with any tuner. What I meant was, there are heaps of guys on here that have gone APR. I don't recall anyone has had major problems or blown turbo's with any tune.
