Hi , I had the same issue with my My 09 147TSI when I picked it up . Didn`t find out about it until the first time that I used the trailer.

Now I can only speak about the MY09 ... The dealer connected up his diagnostic computer and made some adjustments in the vehicle computer to include the tow bar option.

Now when I connect a trailer the display in the RCD510 shows that a trailer is connected to the back of the vehicle (when I reverse only) and stops the beeping.
It is also supposed to adjust the vehicle stability system (?) to control any trailer sway that may occur.

Also if I touch the back button on the display it stops the beeping / optical display and reverts back to the radio.

While there is mention of trailer sway & stability systems, does anyone know if the system is trailing the rear brakes the whole time, or only if sway is detected? I kind of feel as though the brakes wear out quick enough as it is, without the stability system trying to wear them quicker...
