Thanks mate. I've PM'd Swallowtail to ask him to do it. As this is not in the MK6 forum, I can't update it!![]()
Hi All
I installed my 9W7 unit today in my 2010 passat wagon. I got the 9W7 on ebay (from the polish seller).
The RNS510 came pre wired with a microphone for voice control, so I had to cut the microphone cable, and join it to one of the connectors from the supplied microphone cable. I used vagcom to turn on the telelphone module (in the can gateway controller module 19), cycled the power and... nothing. I checked the telephone module and it was showing some errors, turned out I had the mic cables reverse.. swapped the plugs around, cleared the codes and cycled the power.. my phone could now see the VW module, but wouldn't pair with it. By pure chance I decided to close the driver door.. suddenly the MFD showed the phone menu's.. (it was probably there all along, but when the door is open the MFD show the door open warning!) I bound the phone (Iphone 3gs) to the unit, sync'd the contacts list. Made a couple of test calls.. all good![]()
I routed the cable down the side of the center console, under the carpet to just under the driver seat. Not an easy job, used a coat hanger to pull some thin cable through, then taped the think cable to the 9W7 cable and connector, used a bunch of electrical tape to join the two cables and to make the connect smooth so it wouldn't snag. There are a couple of cutouts already in the carpet under the driver seat so I pulled it through to there. I didn't have the foam carrier box for the unit so I just used velcro to hold it in place under the seat.
The hardest part was getting the RNS510 back in. The cable provided has a bulky socket to take the big connector that was in the back of the 510 before.. and there's not a lot of space behind.. took about 10 minutes of messing about before I got it in.
Anyway, well worth the effort, the 9W7 is fantastic, by far the best BT module I've used. Call quality is excellent.

Thanks for the writeup!
Thought I'd read somewhere that with voice activation, you could just use the same mic? So yours now uses the new mic for voice control two? Or one mic for each purpose?
I'm using 1 microphone. The supplied harness basically piggybacks the existing quadlock plug, and the existing microphone was hard wired into the existing plug, so I had to cut that and join it to the plug on the new harness. So basically I have the mic going to pins 1 & 7 and then the mic out pins 4 & 9 go to the blu tooth unit. See here - Volkswagen RNS 510 Microphone Connection for voice control | my-gti.com
The diagram there has all the info that's needed connection wise. I'm quite glad I didn't have to route the mic cable.. that looks like a tough job!
The voice activation feature now only works for the blu tooth, not the sat nav, no loss really, the voice activation feature is gimicky at best, it's slow I find it quicker to just press the buttons.
I tried taking photos but they didn't turn out too good, only have an 18-200 lens for my DSLR, need to get a decent lens for close up shots. I'm hoping to install a reverse camera eventually, so I'll try and get some shots then.

As promised here is a pic of the wiring that needs to change when connecting a Parrot CK3000 with a VW2Connect CANBus cable to the RCD510 and RNS510's.
Essentially the pink wire, middle block bottom, 3rd from bottom on the right hand side needs to be cut and joined to the blue wire at the top. In the picture, the bottom of the adaptor is actually the top, tilted forward for the picture.
The new location of the wire seen here.
Explanation of pin assignments on RCD510, here on Maverick's site.

Thanks Sharkie thats awesome. I'll be able to pass this onto my bro (he's going to be my rns510 installer!) for configuration and installation!
So cut the pink and move it to the blue (which is the RCD's mute position) what is that blue wire and did you have to move it somewhere as well? Did you splice into it, or just cut and join the pink leaving the blue not connected?

This is a shot of the BT unit fitted by my dealer Camberwell Volks... is it possible to identify which one out of that 3 models on the first page that the dealer put in my car? car didn't have BT when I test drove it and it was added later. I have RCD510 and the phone menu is working on screen, I do get access to my phone book too (Dopod / HTC with WM6 phone) although it couldn't get to my phone's SMS possible since it's using WM6 outlook which can be non-compliant to standard mobile phone sms storage system.
Thinking to get RNS510 retro-fitted and wondering if my existing BT will keep working with RNS510?
