First up, apologies if this has been covered, but I’m needing some clarification.
Over the past few months I’ve been playing with the audio in my Mk5 Jetta (2009) to try and improve the system. I’ve got to a point where I need the advice of those who have done this before and can advise on the next best solution.
I have taken out the factory head unit which had the ipod connection added on. I replaced it with an Eonon D5153, as the bang for buck was too good to pass up. Problem is I love good quality sound and it just doesn’t have the audio adjustments to produce something decent (just bass and treble).
I have also added a reverse camera, new phoenix gold speakers throughout and a 12” sub. The system should be balanced, but it’s let down by the head unit.
Can someone advise which model head unit you would recommend, given I’d like to keep the iphone hard wired, reverse camera, it needs Bluetooth and can add a sub and amp? The RNS510 come up, but the different variants have got me confused, so advice here would be appreciated.
Have a look at some of the suggestions here: vw golf mkv head unit options.
To me, the really interesting/good units are in the ~$800+ territory (ie things like the RNS510, if you just want something that works, because OEM, the Audiosources DNS810 (lolol), Zenec 2015whateveritscalled, Dynavin N6, and then all the pioneer/alpine/kenwood + idatalink module stuff).
The chinese generic units (Eonon etc) are always going to be let down by their hardware, because they're made to a price. Build quality is going to be cheap and plasticy, software will be awful, they won't have the most powerful amps and the dacs won't be the best in the world. Gotta spend mo money to get better quality, to be honest.
