Hi
I'm probably going to do the MDI install on my rcd510 soon.
Did you find much info on this?

Hello
I know this has been probably discussed before but I have purchased an MDI from Ebay and was wondering has anyone installed one of these themselves before. I have the RNS510 with premium bluetooth. I have searched everywhere but there does not seem to be any specific instructions available for fitting these units.
Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Darren

Haven't done it myself (yet), but judging by the kits available, it should be as simple as removing the loom from the back of the RNS, plugging it into the adapter (which should come with the kit) then plugging the other end back into the RNS unit. The adapter is basically a bridge so you don't have to change or add pins.
There should also be a plug fused into the adapter cabling which connects to the MDI box.
After that, you'll need to enable the MDI kit in VCDS, reset your unit and you should be good to go. Refer to The Official VWW VCDS Tweak Library for where to go.
Obviously make sure you plug your USB cable into the MDI and run the cable it to wherever you want it (can easily run it to the glove box).
There are some kits which provide a bracket to mount in the centre console, but it'd be a more involved job of removing trim and whatnot, where as with the basic kit, you just remove the RNS, plug some stuff in, put the unit back and you're pretty much set.

Hello
Yes it turned out to be very simple. No adaptors to plug in. I just removed the factory blue plug from the multi plug connector which previouly was wired to AUX plug in the console. then plugged in the new plug, connected can hi and can lo to the original wires then wired in the earth. then enabled the mdi in VCDS and thats it. Picked up the brandnew unit on ebay for $150. Had to buy ipod cable off ebay as it only came with usb plug. Wel worth the trouble IMHO
