Turbo controller

Touareg V6 3.0 TDI 176kw my 2008:

So I've got a sick turbo and I decided to get a replacement (remanufactured) from Germany and ended up having to get the turbo and the controller from two different suppliers. The turbo looks brand new they've done a good job on it. The controller IS new. Both parts match originals in terms of numbers etc.

Question: I've heard a rumour that the controller has to be configured to work with the car. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so what do I need to do.

Any help would be really appreciated, I want my car back it's been awsome.
