vr6 engine and gearbox drop into cl?

    Heya to all,
ive been spending the best part of a year sorting things in order and finally two days ago i managed to pick up a very tidy 3dr 1.8 cl in a very clean gunmetal grey, been struggling with the powers that be to import my own from home, gotta wait a couple of years to become a permanent resident B#@*#X to that i couldnt wait that long..anyhow has anybody dropped a vr6 engine and gearbox into a cl or gl,i know mechanically its possible and fine to do in my eyes but are there any legal hitches as far as the RTA are concerned? Im reckoning that a new gearbox could be needed in the not too distant future for the 1.8 engine, its a manual, anybody got any sources on reconditioned boxes in NSW..Been checking out some of the Dubs on the site and its great to see that vdubbin is alive and well down under!!

This is relevant to my interests.....

    *listens intently*

I've asked a very similar question not too long ago and the general response was: Yes, it can be done, but it's more trouble than its worth. I guess if you're set on the 2dr VR6 then you don't really have many options other than importing or building one yourself (although there is one for sale on the site). I'm not sure of the potential of the 1.8l donk but if you did some work to it, I'm sure you could get a decent output.

As for RTA, I think it should be relatively easy as the engine was available in the car and from past experience I've heard that it means you don't need to get a mod-plate (or something along those lines). However, this was old Mazda/rotary conversions we're talking about, so it may not apply.

Take everything I've said with a grain of salt because I'm still new at this, but hopefully I've helped a little bit .

Yeah it can be done and I have checked in the RTA books and with the blue slip people and it doesn`t need engineering. This is because they just look up the vin number and see what engines are allowable for that kind of car

I`m keen to build a 2 door VR6 and have a donor car lined up, call me and we`ll hook something up if you like.

Also have gearboxes if you`d rather go that route.

Thumbs up vr6 drop into cl

There is hope at last so..
thanks for the feed back with this,im going to price up a vr6 engine and gear box here and in the uk see what the diff in price is including the shipping to aus..it might still work out cheaper from uk,at the moment im trying to line up some 5 stud vr6 hubs to replace the 4 stud hubs front and back on the cl and get rid of the sorry looking drum on the rear, going to fill the gaps in the spokes with some bigbrake upgrade..will have some gear to sell off soon if anybody may be needing parts cheap,i'll put them up on parts for sale including 4 17" alloys, not sure what make they are but they're similar to the audi RS4,9 spokes with black inserts and the finish on the spoke is a brushed alu..i'll post pics of my black 2.0 3dr bk home and post pics of the current project.
    thanks for the feedback

I know its slightly off topic but have you checked to see whether a mk3 cabby would need engineering? Thats my next project as soon as the VR6 is back on the road.

    Thumbs up

    Hey
i honestly havent checked out the engineering spec in regards to a vr6 drop into a cabby but im sure that everything would be working very similar as regard the chassis mounts, that is what you mean?? a cabby would be a good project, anything that breaks the norm is always a breath of air so go for it man.

Thats a great idea Tim, pity ther are still exxy. A Mk3.5 one would be the GO. I`ll have a look next time I`m in the Blue Slip place. If it has the same approval number as the Hardtop, it should be ok. If different, will prob need engineering.
