Read that type 01M was from 96 onwards and also don't have a dipstick.

Yours is a 1995 model, right?
Do you have a dipstick for the gearbox???

I've read that the 01M is a computer controlled 4 speed. If you do have one, I'd be checking if you could change to sports mode with VCDS.

Sadly , I can't do it with the VR6 I'm fixing up but probably for the best.

Note this Haynes Service and Repair Manual does not cover 2.8 VR6 or four-wheel-drive models, so you will probably need to confirm that your auto transmission is a Type 096/Type 01M or a different unit.
Thanks for this and your help in my thread

No problems, any time. I will not pretend to be a mechanic but I do love my Mk3s. Unfortunately, my wife would kill me if I went and bought another Mk3 so I will just have to live my VR6 fantasies through you guys instead

I hear you loud and clear. I'll be selling 3 cars this year so I can go all out on VAG.
The more I look at a VR engine, the more I want to put one in something else

Just saw this. No dipstick. I have '95. Part number is 01M 398 009 for the Meyle filter kit. Currently ~$50 delivered from eBay. I think they are a good brand. Not sure if that one is made in Germany though. At that price, maybe not. VW OEM costs 3x more.
Do you think the Meyle kit for $30 is ok? I mean with filters there shouldn't be much of a difference and the part doesn't undergo high strain. I've heard stories of some high strain Meyle parts failing because they were made in China.

This kit plus Penrite ATF fluid from SCA, makes it about a $100 job. Looks just a bit more complicated than an oil change.
I would assume they just put the VR6 in sports mode all the time
    Past - '95 VW Golf MK3 VR6
Present - '11 Ford Focus LW Diesel (PSA DW10C)

My 2c is that the $30 filter will be fine. Is a new gasket included in the $100?

Since we don't have a button, the sports mode will be full time.. which is what you want

I'm curious to know how it performs once done

I've ordered the kit, yes it includes the gasket. I'll let you know how it goes.
