There's no such thing as a '2E AGG' etc; the 2E is a separate engine in its own right. The only thing of importance is that the later engines were immobilised through a Digifant II system. In the Mk3, the 2E ran through until '94 IIRC, '95- was the ADY, and later came the AGG until the end of the model.

SEATs used the 2E in later model cars as they were simply handballed VW's remaining stock - as tends to happen with most things.

Ultimately, the only thing to consider is that AGGs will probably have lower mileage and the later injection system made for a better idle and smoother running. It's relatively easy to bypass the immobiliser if you want to run the system properly with EFI in a Mk1.
