1.8t Mk3

Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I've got a stock as a rock Black 97 Golf GL with the 8 valve 2L engine. I've had it for about 18 months and have so far resisted the temptation to modd it (although I've wanted to!!!).

However the engine is starting to run a bit rough (bad rattly sound when engine is under load up until about 2,200 rpms) so I've been thinking about dropping in a fresh motor and doing the works (suspension, brakes ect).

Over in the UK it seems the 1.8t conversion is common as muck but no one here seems to do it. I imagine I'd have to get a wrecked mk4 or audi so that all the necessary stuff can be pirated out. Unfortunately I'm not THAT handy with the tools so I'd have to pay for the pleasure.

Do you guys know anyone who's done it? Or have any recommendations for workshops or wreckers in Sydney/NSW?

Hi BBS and welcome to the VWWA forum. Here you will find that there is plenty of information and what nots to do. As well as alot of advice from many of our members.

In your desire for more power, how about doing a vr6 conversion, very nice and abit more power than the 1.8T stock. I'm sure that you would be able to go to a few places to do it. As for finding a engine look at Golf Loon he can possibly get you an engine for it, I think he may have 1 or 2 vr6 engines lying around and possibly a 1.8T

Will look forward to see a 1.8T in a mk3 so should be good, enjoy your stay.

Pete Shelley in Canberra is the only guy that advertises the conversion. Start looking for an engine it may take awhile. Welcome to our forum btw

Welcome! Dropping in a fresher engine seems to be the way to go for more power for those without a VR6 in a Mk3! I've been thinking about this previously too and though I can't tackle it now, I have looked around. http://monty.syr.edu/swap/

As for locally, I don't know who would be able to do it.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I appreciate the feedback too. I think I'll have to do a bit more research on it for the moment. I had thought about the v5 from the bora too just for something different but if I was going to the trouble I think I'd rather the 1.8t

welcome bbs_mk3 -the 1.8t would be a much more easy motor to find as opposed to the vr6,be a more unique mod in australia.its alot more tunable as well,so more power would be more easily realised.
have you thought of rebuilding your motor and dropping a turbo on that?? many kits available from the states....

yeh a 1.8t would be nice and unique.

cant you just take it to any vw mechanic and get conversion done? if u had the engine..

or are there special engine conversion mechs?

Yep I thought of that but I really don't think it's worth the expense of rebuilding the 8 valver. She seems pretty tired so by the time you rebuild and get a bolt on turbo and engine management you could have spent a whole heap of money.

1.8t seems tohave awesome tuning potential too

A 1.8T does have heaps of tuning potential for sure hands down that you can get massive amounts of power out of it. For a sluggish stock engine there is massive amounts of potential to it.

A lot of the bigger companies offer stage kits that you can buy for them bigger turbo, injectors, ECU's, cams and what nots to increase its power. Great choice of motor. Heaps of gains with alot of information on it.

I think you first need to find out a cost of parts then calculate labour. Im not sure how much one of those puppies cost but it wont be cheap, add wiring, add labour to install, add engineering and blueslip then insurance itll cost $$$$$$.

SHould find out the cause of the problem and fix that. It could be something simple like needing a service.
