I need help with a calculation

Ive been invited to a meeting with my federal member and Mr Swan, and have been told i can ask any question after his talk on government matters including the carbon tax and the mining tax.
This is the question i would like to ask but i don't want to get my calculations wrong, there must be a couple of people here with a good grasp of mathematicss.
If the worlds carbon dioxide is 100% and 97% is accruing naturally ,mans contributionon is 3% ,
Australia emissions amount to 1.3% of that 3% which is 0.39% i think , now if we are going to reduce our carbon output by 5% by the year 2020 , What will be our total amount we will be reducing our carbon dioxide i think its 0.0195%
Am i right or wrong

i re-did your calculations and got 0.00195%

(1.3*3)/100= 0.039%??, not sure if im right tho

On the right track, but the .39 is actually 0.039. Final number is 0.00195% of the world's total carbon emissions.
But there are a lot better questions to ask the treasurer than boring carbon number which he will not have the answer for, it's a greens policy after all, so ask the greens.
Ask the treasurer how he personally feels about his government having no power and giving into every green policy. Why his party's policies have become so close the Lib/Nat policies that one could be forgiven for thinking they are all the same party.
There is just no differentiation between them now.

Back on track, your math is.
100*0.03*0.013*0.05 = 0.00195

Replace the 100 by the total tonnes of carbon in the world and you will get the amount Australia is planning to reduce by.

It really is a piddly amount 0.00195% which to my why of thinking is nothing in the scheme of things , its going to cost thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to achieve practical nothing .

As far as i know i will be able to ask a question , now weather its selective or not i don't know ,but the letter stated that Mr Swan will answer questions after he addresses the gathering .

They are prepared for those types of questions. He will say "we still have to do our bit , no matter how small" and you will have nowhere to go.

Better to ask him "Why is some of our carbon tax money going to the UN who redistribute to countries like North Korea which they supposedly use for climate abatement programs" (they spend it on weapons while their people are starving)

or "What are you going to do for a living after the next elections?"

I think you need to stress the point of your question... the pi$$-ant effect for what is effectively a tax on Australian Manufacture...

eg glass manufacture in this country... you have to melt sand + other minerals - lots of energy... we do that relatively efficiently in this country but you need to buy energy to do so... or we will just import blocks out of china, without any penalty for glass manufactured both less efficiently and with dirtier energy.... Stress the "tax on Manufacture" because that is effectively what it is.

I personally would not gripe so much if all imports were also taxed at 5% unless proven lower (proof of onus on importer/OS manufacturer), then my salary gets taxed at least 3% less. none of this means tested handouts ... oh and as for means testing everything else (effectively this is a tax on working hard/bettering oneself/investing in education/Working Overtime/apprenticeships to trades etc).

They should put the effort on taxing people that cant be a$$ed, including the Bonsoy late sipping eviron-mental Ferals. That is it!! Tax Bonsoi!!

Joe hockey was at my school on Friday talking to year 12 economics students from my school and some others and he told us that the mining tax is only going to generate a third of the target amount and they've allocated five times the amount they will generate...

Also he said that the carbon tax makes such a miniscule difference on a global scale that it was almost pointless. He thought that although it was a good idea it would be uneffective unless the US, China or the euro zone came on board.

PS. Sorry for the long post but this is what I think and have been told about the two topics you mentioned and thought it may help in what you ask the treasurer
