Misfuelling - prevention

Not that this has happened to me or my family ever, but the prospects of someone misfuelling a diesel in a petrol world seem very real and possibly very expensive.

The RACQ is reported as having run a recent story on misfuelling.

Doesn't surprise me... My mother just destroyed the engine on her beloved passat after ignoring the engine temp gauge was on max, continued to drive for 10 minutes as she couldn't be inconvenienced to pull over and check what was wrong. Now the car needs a 4k rebuild, the cylinder head and the entire cooling system are both destroyed
There are incredibly stupid people everywhere, even your own flesh and blood unfortunately.

Thank god she'll never drive any of my cars

Clever. I think it could work here, but I'd wait to see if something similar is introduced here first.

I filled up my car today for th first time and I checked and rechecked to make sure I was filling up with diesel. A pleasant change not having to wait in line to fill up at a petrol pump and also, the diesel pump flows much faster. Filling is over in a few seconds!!

Only if you have a skinny VAG filler pipe - on my Landcruiser it was scary watching the $ figure increase when filling up from near empty - those pumps can really push the diesel in fast !

I still remember the counter jockey at a Mobil station at Hay abusing me for "having a stupid european diesel with the wrong size filler pipe" when I politely suggested that they need to get some smaller nozzles (after I had spent 10 minutes dribbling about 30 litres into my Transporter). On principle I will never, ever buy fuel there again.

ZVA slimline
ZVA 25 hi flow to 140L/min (OD 31mm)
ZVA 32 hi flow to 200L/min (OD 39mm)

Gilbarco lists three flow rates on standard bowsers:
Standard flow 50 litres/min - presumably slimline
Hi-Flow Diesel 80 litres/min - presumably 25mmID/31mm OD
Ultra Hi-Flow Diesel 130 litres/min - which could work with 25mm nozzle

Both skinny and fat nozzles at the local BP fit right in Polo filler neck. Is there a third size at truck stops???
