    Abnormal Shutter

    Hi,
I seem to get a shutter in my 1.9 Tdi ( Skoda Octavia ). The shutter happens during take off, and gets to worse depending on load. I usually throttle the vehicle at around 1100-1300 rpm. I've taken it to the dealer a few times, and get a response such that includes :

We've acknowleged the problem, however cannot identify the problem

Not enough power to propel the vehicle (my favourite) lol

I'm not sure because this is my first diesel, but I've suggested to them that this is the DMF(flywheel, i believe). I've got to a point where I'm not even sure what to do.

    Any suggestions?

are you able to decribe how violent this 'shuttering' or shuddering is?

if you can confirm that as you are engaging the clutch, you don't allow the revs to drop below about 1100rpm, then perhaps you have a problem with the DMF/ clutch assembly. a good way to test would be to take off and keep the revs high, like around 2000rpm.... if you're clutch has a problem, this will likely make the shuddering VERY bad.

Can you tell us where you are, so someone might suggest another dealer.

    thanks for the reply...
I'm based in Sydney, well the shutter is not very bad yet not so good. The gear handle will shake like 2-3 cm's...

but yeah I absolutely wouldnt mind anyone taking it for a test drive and telling me if it's abnormal. It's kind of equilavent of when your in the elevator and you get to your level (that last shake/shudder). lol... don't ask me why I thought about that

I'd suggest you try keeping the engine revs above 1,500. The 1.9 is a bit of an agicultural engine, and at the low revs you are using it is vibrating a fair bit.

Not enough power to propel the vehicle (my favourite) lol
I actually agree with your dealer. Your engine isn't designed to do any work until the turbo starts to boost properly, and it won't do that until about 1,600 rpm. Less revs than that and the whole system isn't working properly.

My 2.0 TFSI "grumbles" if I try to take off up a hill with less than 1,500 rpm (particularly when the engine is cold), but if I increase the revs a bit everything smooths out.

Greg's onto something there, are you sure you're into boost? A diesel is going to complain it's head off below that, unless you're cruising on the flat, and it could indeed be the fact you're expecting a petrol engine response down low.

My car isn't happy below 1500rpm, unless I'b being gentle with it. If I want to accelerate, I'm dropping a cog to get into the 2000rpm plus fun band, and THAT's normal for a turbo diesel.

Why don't you take another car for test drive from the dealer, to see if it is doing the same like yours?

yeah I don't really take off on boost... yeah I took a 2.0 TDi, apparently no 1.9 tdi in stock ( probably because of release of new model). The 2.0 Tdi, had the same thing but not as bad as my one. I don't know, hard to comprehend I guess... plus me being me, I don't like to ride my clutch ( find it offensive when others do it lol ).

Slipping the clutch IS a turbo diesels best friend. Make peace with it, or get used to the chugga chugga tractor shuffle!

You'll be amazed at how quickly you get very, very good on the clutch.
