    Questions regarding MY08 R36

    Hi guys,

Looking to purchase an R36 very soon (moving from an MY10 Jetta 118TSI) and I'm trying to decide whether to go for the MY08 or MY09. I haven't had a chance to get in the earlier model so I had a few questions for you gurus:

*MFD-wise, does the '08 have readouts for speed and oil temp? Those are the two that I tend to monitor a lot, along with consumption.

*Is the RNS510 fitted to the '08 the same as in the later models? I have it in the Jetta and I love it.

*Does the '08 have the optical parking system?

*Aside from the dash, are there any other major differences between the '08 and the '09?

I think I'd prefer the later model but a low-km '09 with satnav and sunroof would probably be stretching my budget. Then again, it does seem to be a buyer's market at the moment... Maybe I'll find one for a steal somewhere!

    Thanks in advance.

My 09 model has an updated MFD and I have the optical parking system shown on the RNS.
If you don't really need a sunroof, you could save a buck/two. I used to have a sunroof in my Accord Euro, but I rarely use it but thats imo.

    I am Afraid not.

Not sure on Model Number but the 08 had a good stereo, but with dot matrix type blue display.

*Does the '08 have the optical parking system?

    Nope

    Nope.

I sold my 08 for high $40s 3 months ago - Sunroof, Auto Tailgate, 52,000 kms. They are definately a bargain, and a fantastic car.

    Thanks in advance.[/QUOTE]

    Thanks for the replies.

I should have specified about the OPS, obviously it won't be on the old non-touchscreen stereo unit (can't remember the model number but what it came with as standard) but if it had the RNS510 optioned in then would the optical parking be integrated?

The old non-touchscreen stereo was the RCD310 I think. It is possible to have a basic OPS display on the RCD310, IIRC.

    From the US VW site:

You can also have the Optical Parking System (OPS) displayed on the display of the RCD 310 if you wish.

Let me rephrase - if I was to buy an MY08 R36 it would have RNS510. Would it therefore have the OPS in the display as you would see in a later year model?

my 08 Model had RNS510 but did not have OPS. AFAIK it appeared on 09 models - when the RCD510 touchscreen unti became standard.

hey mate, we seem to be sailing in the same boat. i've put down a deposit on a MY08 R36 with all the bells and whistles except sat-nav. its done a tidy 90000kms in the country (wodonga, i've been told) and i'm being quoted $39K for it.

can anyone tell me whether it would be wise to proceed with this blue beast? she seems, looks, feels great - inside out. but i'm a bit wary of ongoing maintenance costs and / or tyre and brake wear.

any suggestions what i should be looking for?

    thanks in advance guys.

I'd advise purchasing an extended warranty, and tyre and brake wear aren't too bad considering how well it stops and how heavy it is.
