It's the same deal as petrol, you want high combustion pressure, but to avoid high revs. You need a lot of load in too tall a gear, so hills, lots of flat out from low rpm in third, really make it work, but back off before it revs out. I took a day trip through the hills, and spent the time making it haul big gears with the foot to the floor, and upchanged before it went over 3-3500rpm. You want high throttle but low speeds if you get my meaning.
It's always about forcing the rings against the bore, which needs peak combustion pressure, but to avoid revs to allow the tranny, driveline etc to bed in. Go easy on the brakes too, people often think they need to drive fast to bed a car in "hard" but speed has nothing to do with it, making the engine work real hard is what it is all about. Hell, find a heavy trailer to lug around!!
Diesels also don't really totally bed in for tens of thousands of KM's, but the first 500kms is pretty important if you want the very best bed in you can get. I made a weekend of it.
