Is the cost of extended warranty worth taking the plunge?

    Hi folks

I've just purchased my first vw. 2010 diesel passat wagon. I'm by happy with it but the warranty expires late march 2013. So, very soon. I've done some research and now I'm extending that research to this forum.

I understand vw have extended the warranty on the gearbox to 150000 km, and 5 years, but my concern is that something else expensive may go wrong in that time.

I'd like to hear from as many people as possible as to their opinion on whether the $2700 allianze warranty is worth taking the plunge. I'm under the impression that vw are typically very reliable and here's hopping that its never required.

I'd also like to know what typical problems could one expect to occur and are these expensive repairs. Does this model have any known gremlins that I should be concerned about?

Any help, advice, or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers folks.

    Friction nut.

I would say yes if you plan on keeping it forba while mine has already paid for new injectors (niw covered under vw recall) rear led tail light and most recently new covenience module, relay and steering column lock car was at vw for 4 days so I hate to think what labour bill was

Check around I got a 3 year Drivesure Platinum extended warranty insurance policy for $1750 through www.Ineedwarrantynow.com
It is with Swan insurance and was a lot cheaper than Allianz for similar conditions.

Be aware extended warranties are INSURANCE not the same as a manufacturers warranty that you get with a new vehicle.

As an indication my dealer wanted to charge $147.50 an hour for labour to fix a small hard to find problem and said it could take a day to find it (maybe) Wasnt a warranty issue according to them.

I found and fixed it myself but took half a day to get panels off interior trim etc and fix problem and replace them. $610 plus at dealer.

I'd recommend it since you just bought a Passat!

I just got mine in Dec.
Aliianz one I got is exactly the same as the VW new car extended warranty just no roadside assistance.

I've had 3 VW's in recent times and all I can say is... I'd never own one outside of warranty. Definitely extend it to 5 years if that's how long you intend to keep it.

Thanks for the information and opinions. Has anyone heard of, or heard anything about POMI? I think they may also use the name NWC. they seem to be significantly cheaper. I'm going to take a wild stab and suggest there is a reason for that and I'm sure it's not good.

Any more opinions welcome. I'm still undecided. It's a lot of coin.

I personally wouldn't touch the cheaper ones and only go for the allianz extension offered by the dealers. would you want to be up for a major replacement such as a new DSG for $4k+labour?

    Thanks Booba,

I was under the impression that the DSG is covered to 5 years and 150'000k. I know the Allianze would take me beyond that but that some piece of mind for a while. Correct me if I'm wrong.

One more question. I rea on another thread about a recall on the injectors, is this correct?

If I remember correctly that recall was for previous version injectors
