    B5 A4's

I'm considering an upgrade to a B5 A4 in the near future and was curious to what changes were made through the years as they ran for quite, are the earlier ones worth staying away from?

    I would be after a 1.8t quattro

Are they all essentially the same engine wise? or are the earlier 1.8t's something to stay away from as they were quite a new motor early on I guess.

Anything to look out for? what sort of km's should I start being worried about on the engines?

    cheers in advance.

early to late saw major changes, my99 models had later style door handles, later speedo with display, flip key keyless entry, projector headlights, foglights, updated tailights, better interior (seat shapes changed), better stereo (sometimes bose) later climate system, and a few other goodies. As far as 1.8t are concerned anything from a 97-98 onwards that is drive by wire is good, but my99's are just a touch more modern which is nicer, as for km's its not essential to have low k's, the only things that go bad on those are control arms and tire rod ends but ive driven 200,000 onwards models that feel just as good as the others.

if you go for an A4 B5 1.8TQ after '99.5, there is the option of the GP model. It came with 132kW instead of the standard 110kW.

I think you can tell it is the GP because it has the right side of the T on the badge filled in with red. (not sure... it took me six months to figure out mine was a GP...) Either that, or look at the sticker in the manual or wheel well - it will say 132kW.

it also includes the bits PeDiES mentioned. The interior when compared to the pre-facelift models feels quite a bit nicer. The bigger bolsters on the seats are a welcome improvement. Also, in that facelift they lost the oval white audi badge from just behind the front wheel.

I picked one up in january this year, and am absolutely wrapped. mine is an A4 B5 1.8TQ Avant (GP model)

Thanks guys, I very much like the Avant's hard to find a turbo let alone a quattro though it seems.

I'm considering a couple of options one being finishing my mk1 off, a lot of work to do to it though but would be worth it in the end... although it might not might be the best daily drive but will be cool as hell
