wow, i think nearly everyone missed the point. To clarify:
1. The OP has a Wagon. Wagon boots just have gas struts like the golf does. Theres no spring balance.
2. Yes, you have to press and hold the boot release button for the latch to unlock..... then, if the gas struts are powerful enough, they will push open the door (as the video shows).
3. If the liftback has balance springs for the door, then its not going to be nearly as simple to do - but thats not what the OP asked.
