I only bring this up because one of the first recommended mods when increasing HP figures for the 1.8T is to replace the dual mass fly as they don't like to much HP. And then increase the clamp force of the clutch.

If this info isn't correct, I would like to know as this would be one less thing on the mod list and could be oney spent else where.
    Cheers Troy.
    Hi Toy and welcome aboard.

I have been running the dual mass since I got the car and mine has had the works done for a car still running the standard turbo and I have never had a problem with it.

The best reason for going to a single mass is the larger diameter plate you fit. The VR6 clutch is easy to get hold of too.
The single mass does make the drivetrain shunt a bit, when going on and off the throttle.

I would only go SM if you need the extra clamping force because you have got more than a stage 1 chip. ie You have fitted a bigger turbo. I think in a MK4 a std clutch would be ok with up to 230 crank HP. Unless you drive like a complete Muppet, it should last several years of driving easily.

I would leave it until it starts to slip.

Mine went while backing a trailer up a steepish driveway. I managed to run it around for a week or so but it wouldn't have lasted a lot longer.

Certainly get the parts located, so you know the lead times you will need to apply. Golfloon has flywheels in std and lightened forms most of the time. A syd VR clutch will take 300hp if you are sensible.

Less rotating weight = more torque. You can't create torque by adding extra weight to the driveline.

All the dual mass/heavy flywheel does is make things smoother, engine changes less apparent. Ie - Light flywheel = Engine spins up faster + revs drop faster.

Correct. The rotating mass of the flywheel is just the same as the weight of the car. The engine has to drive it/make it move.

"More torque" is not the right term. The flywheel (when rotating) has stored rotational energy, the heavier the flywheel, the more stored energy, which means that it takes more effort to slow the flywheel, hence the "appearance" of more torque.

Sorry for the miss representation guys, the "appearance" of torque was what I was trying to get at, a motor produces "same" torque regardless of clutch flywheel setup, seat of the pants meter says there is more "torque" with a heavier flywheel.

Well - the LM's are back on and I think they look better. I have brought the rears in 5mm and pushed the fronts out 5mm. It looks much more even now and I'm pretty happy with it.

My new strut brace is in as well as my rear stress brace. I must say they look the dogs bolloks but I doubt I'll observe any realy bennefit for day to day driving. Track time they will be a great help but you can't do silly stuff like that on the streets.

I'll get some photos when it's day light again.

Oh yeah - I also got my BBS centre caps! They look much better with them on now. Big thanks once again to the boys from TCCA. The TST rear stress brace is a royal pain to fit and they did a tops job. thanks again guys!
