    Kevin's MK4 GTI

    Hi everyone.

so earlier this year I was looking around for a golf I had previously owned a mk2 gti and regretfully sold it a few years ago, I came across this mk4 gti with front end damage and fairly high km it had no bids on ebay im still not quite sure why I did it but I put a bid on this car on ebay without inspecting it, and not knowing the condition of it but anyway few days later I had won the car haha
its an early model 1999 and it wasn't the best example of a gti, but at the price it sold for I was happy to buy it as a project. the previous owner was kind enough to fill me in and send plenty of pictures of the damage before I arranged to have the car transported to melbourne

I had it shipped from qld to vic pulled off the damaged panels and bumpers to see how bad it was underneath, surprisingly it was pretty straight and i only had to replace the rad support and headlights as the brackets were non-existent.

I found a bumper for sale that was the same color and it also came with the front lip that mine was missing, had an undamaged fender painted and fitted but the colour is just not right and its still bugging me now. I left the damaged grill hanging there for a little while.

the car came with an annoying as hell turbosmart BOV and the mufflerless exhuast was loud and droned at constant rpm, so first thing i did was get rid of the BOV and had a resonator and muffler fitted to the exhaust.

the car didn't need too much for RWC, just needed to fix an oil leak from the rocker cover, fit standard springs as it came with pedders springs and fix up a few little things here and there and it was all good to go.
so far its been a cheap and fun little daily and i drive it everywhere and anywhere I can, the golf even made the trip all the way up to the snow without any issues

    now time for mods

so here are a few things Ive done to the car

black grill with a red vinyl stripe and red gti badge (from ebay) I found the front end abit boring to look at.

17" porsche wheels off a boxster, i went with h&r adapters, 30mm in the rear and 25mm up front, but Im thinking i might put 30mm at the front aswell.

vinyl roof wrap in gloss black

lowered the rear end with pedders springs, still using standard shocks.

and today I fitted an ebay special side mount cooler, i pulled everythig off before i realised that I dont have a MAP sensor, so i got a titanium plate made up by a mate at JVN garage. because titanium looks awesome.

    and how it sits now

wow that side mount intercooler is HUGE! did it fit straight up without any problems?
Wonder how much better it is over stock and how much worse than a front mount etc?
    stealth is always nice haha

looks like you're making nice progress mate well done!

my gti has 210k km, fixing the little things that wear out with UPGRADES is the best part

Testing has been done on vwvortex and it performs worse than stock because the front surface area does not increase and the core is inferior... But you learnt how to swap out the intercooler which is good to know. And it only set you back $150 if you know where to buy.

Nice car mate, really like the black roof. I'd be cutting some holes in you wheel arch liner to get some air flowing through that intercooler

If you have vagcom, you could log IAT temps and let us know the results after a series of 3rd gear pulls at full boost.

Dubster you might be thinking of the tyrolsport side mount.

if you are after a stock looking "vented" inner guard you can apparently use one from a mk1 TT or I noticed the other day my mums 2000 Hyundai Elantra has a heavily vented inner guard that would be perfect for cutting up and transplanting into the mk4. just need to glue or rivet it together or plastic weld if you can do that sorta thing
