    Update:

spoke with AAMI today. They said they still haven't determined liability and that I should get a copy of the police report and send it to them. I should also get a quote and send it to them.

So I have a guy coming over in half an hour from Fuller Brothers repairs fyshwick, as they seem to be the only guys who do call-out repairs (the car's at my house and I can't afford to tow it all around canberra). Does anyone know other smash repairs in canberra who do call outs ? Or does anyone have a tow-truck I can borrow in exchange for beer or some dollars ?

as for requesting the police report, can I do this paperwork at the station ? I'd prefer to pay over the counter, not fuss with mail etc

    thanks for the info

Go down to the Police station and ask them Far better than wasting time asking for opinions on here and having to wait on a reply.

Get into it Every day you wait can go against you if AAMI think you cant be bothered.

Get on the phone and ring around the repairers Only way to find out for sure.

As earlier people have told me to do, I would have gone to my insurer, but i don't have insurance ... just couldn't afford to renew, so I'm really fighting this one.
So what would you have done if you'd run up the back of a Rolls Royce / Mercedes / any average joes car?

    Indeed.

Contrary to common belief, the less money you have, the more you need insurance.

I know, i know ... my dad gave me the royal dressing down afterwards....

Good news, AAMI contacted me and confirmed other driver was at fault. So they've taken the car off me and will give me a quote by Wednesday.

In the meantime, picked this up:

Sad to be leaving VAG, but thought i'd give something else a try. Love this little car, the 2.0 turbo is real pokey and fun

    Lets get this straight

You couldnt afford insurance on last car but have enough to buy that before getting a settlement for the damaged one. Strange
Hope you have insurance on that one.

Relax Hillbilly, it was a good deal. I borrowed a tad to get me over the line, but it will work out.

And yes, this one will be insured-- not for much though; these are fairly cheap

As I say to my kids & the grads that I mentor "The person that doesn't stuff up is the one that doesn't make decisions. Just learn from it."

SAABs are cheap as chips these days. You can buy a 2009 Ve3ctor bio-power for $17k these days. Something like the OPs would be easily <$4k (probably more like $2.5k)
