Hey,
The easiest way is to approach your friendly local VW mechanic and they will most likely scan codes for free.
Hello all, I am pretty new to this stuff. Anyone have any thoughts on a good ODB reader for my Golf 2001 1.6? Having some intermittent starting issues and suspect some sensors. I have been on ebay an there are a pethora available. Any advantages in using a laptop vs a stand alone unit?
Regards,

I have a standalone unit which is good for scanning/resetting codes, but that's about it. I'd go a laptop if you want to do anything more than that.
Edit: Actually just noticed you're local - if you want to scan your car let me know.

depends what you need/want to do.
An obd reader will scan codes, clear most faults and perhaps some very minor other things, depending on the type.
If you spend around $300 and buy a proper vagcom cable (dont mess with the cheapies), then you can use that and a laptop to do most of the coding you will ever need.
