So im guessing axles aren't supposed to look like this?



Started when I was going to uni this morning as a knock when I changed gear/started and stopped. When I was on my way home it was a strange knocking/shuddering whenever I coasted but not when I was accelerating, by the time I got home it was happening when I was turning left, which is the side that picture is from.

What exactly am I looking at? And whats it going to take (cost) to fix?

Your axle boot has shat itself. Probably won't hurt driving like it for long, I've known people to drive like it for ages. Though sooner or later your CV will let go. have a look at this VWVortex.com - DIY - Blown CV Boot Replacement and inspection It might help!

If its banging, clicking, clunking etc i'd say the actual CV joint has gone especially since its prevalent when turning. Time for a new cv joint or driveshaft i'd say.

As stated the boot has torn and now the CV is stuffed.
Had you noticed the grease earlier you may have been able to replace the boot and avoided the extra expense of a new CV.
Basically the boot keeps the grease in and the dirt out, now that the dirt is in the bearings are dead.

I was luck years ago as I saw messy crap on my wheels, got it fixed quick smart.

not sure on price but there is a place in slacks creek that can recondition it... cant recall what the place is called now. its off one of the roads at the lights at autobarn.... VDUB...

I replaced all the cv's/boots in mine and bought the parts from the uk over ebay (genuine) far cheaper even after postage, cant quite remember exactly how much but I'm fairly sure it was less than $500

i bought entire next axles with inner and outer cvs, boots, complete setup from ebay , from the UK for about $300 landed to my door in less than a week. Not genuine, but quality seems fine
