    T4 2.5 revs but won't start - ideas?

So I took the T4 for a drive and it lacked power, but it worked. Got home and parked it. Two days later I tried to start it to go and get exhaust fixed - it revved all by itself a couple of times and stopped. repeated 4-5 times and battery flat (battery is new). Charged battery overnight thinking that was the problem and it won't start - same problem.
    Any ideas?

I am guessing this is a petrol.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

well I worked through a process over the past two days.
Today I put new leads on the car, in exactly the same place as originally fitted (one off one on), which made no difference what so ever. Then as it was idling roughly I pulled the lead off no3 plug and had no change in rpm. Same thing with no 2, but 1/4/5 lead off had engine die.
I pulled all of the plugs at the same time and 2/3 were clean/partly sooty and all the others were well sooty.
A this time I realised that all the leads were off an unmarked and the new bosch ones had some leads the same length. So a quick google had the dizzy lead order and the old leads were back on. Start the car and it runs as sweet as a nut! Took it for a drive and it was a completely different car with it's roaring 80kw!
What I suspect was that the previous owner had run it this way? Whatever the case it now runs much better!

Either that or someone pulled a fast one on you , I have had it happen to me some time ago buggers at a workshop I was doing some contract work for switched leads and took me a few head scratches to realize what they had done luckily for me I was still at their location and their smirks gave it away .

used a scanner today and got the fault code 00515 cam position sensor (hall) sensor signal outside tolerance.

Cam TDC and flywheel TDC marks line up, so cam should be in spec. So what could it be...if hall sensor had truly failed then engine should not run?

Will have to go along and speak to VW specific workshop in Melb to check codes. Otherwise all running well. Does not like steep hills, but then what would with 80kw and 2000kg?

What octane rating fuel are you using My work van "[petrol} is supposed to run on minimum 91 RON but I use 95 RON as on the lesser it triggers an engine light and runs very sluggish under load until refueled with the higher rating petrol . The main problem is that there are very minimal testing of fuel RON levels in Australia so you end up getting less than you are supposed to .

I use 95ron from caltex. I'm familiar with preignition, so it's not that. I suspect that the VW code reader will be more specific.
