I already have a 4motion. I was talking about a different engine Altogether. Eg petrol 4motion from a passat or something?

Cheaper way would be to get the petrol van from the same time, that was written off but in running conditions if it existed and do the swap - everything that'd be needed. Otherwise, you would not only need the engine, but also, ECU, wiring harness, instrument cluster, fuel tank and lot more.
Replace or repair your engine and EGR delete is the cheapest option.

Yeah, I'd just find a compatible long motor, and go with that.

Everything's cheap for these vans over there.
It's why our Pommy friends get such a shock when they have to repair one here!

I would have thought that too. But the ebay ad says $99 to AU. And you could negotiate an additional price for not doing changeover (they blow up so often they can't be worth that much). Supplier has excellent reviews although none I could see for motors. At $3000 for a rebuilt motor it would have to be worth a look? I know I would compared to an unknown local second hand or 10k new from VW (what I was last quoted by my vw mechanic).

Just had the head replaced as there was a crack behind a valve. 5k...

Well good luck and hopefully that's then end of it.
For me I think I'll explore fully the import options when my time comes. Fortunately I have another vehicle so can afford to be off the road for a long period.
