This is a repost, but deserves to be in this thread also.

Just drove me Polo GTi back home. They advised there was oil on the spark plug in cylinder 4. The sparkies were cleaned and a software update applied. I also complained about the oil consumption of 4.5L/4000km. They changed the following "optimised hose for crankcase ventilation" which i assume is the breather pipe people talk about.

Still getting a lot of soot from the exhaust from the drive home, will have to wait until next month before I can tell how the consumption is going.

    Fingers crossed.

My gti goes in on Monday to have the breather pipe done. He didn't even look at the car. I just told them it had dropped to half way down the dipstick in 5k. He just asked the rego. Funny thing was it hadn't used any for he first 3k then after its first long constant trip it dropped steadily after that.

Took my car to vw yesterday for the oil consumption test and they decided to order in the oil breather pipe. Hopefully this will fix my issue. I have currently used spot on 5ltrs in 10000kms.

I did the 1000kms just before Xmas, and they told me they topped up 0.5 ltrs of oil which they say is well within VW specifications, but my tailgate is still covered in soot.
Worst of all the Service manager was contradicting everything the head mechanic told me last time I was in.
She, the service manager told me that they want to fix the problem, but VW Europe do not believe them. But the head mechanic told me that once I came in after 1000kms, they would write up a report and send it to Europe and wait for a reply.

Was reading through this thread and this comment is very misleading (mechanical losses) is not 60% nor is all that lost through ring contact. The main reason of mechanical losses is the inefficiency of a crank shaft.

I seriously must be one of the lucky ones.

Only needed to top up 200ml of oil in the 3200km I've had my car.

Still got a litre in my boot just in case

Mine too, only moved 1-2mm on the dipstick with 13,000km done but I changed my oil very often. Maybe we could share what we are doing right or its simply pure luck.

My enthusiast friend used to tell me not to rev the engine hard even when my water temp reach 90 but I do not believe in him as I did not play with oil temp and pressure gauge back then. True enough, after few thousand km my Honda starts to drink oil and 0.7-1L every 7000km to me was a bad sign, furthermore my fuel consumption went up. After I installed oil and water temp/pressure gauges, it was then I realised it really takes sometime for oil temp to reach optimum temp for it to protect the engine well.
