    ignition barrel/steering lock mechanism problem........

I am currently having issues getting the car started due to the ignition barrel not turning......

I have made sure that the key is inserted correctly........

It happens no matter if the steering wheel is locked or not.....

The only way to get it to turn is to wiggle the steering wheel while attempting to turn the key at the same time......

It's inevitable that this will turn into a warranty repair job

same problem here. when inserting the key it wont turn and feels as if it is solid stuck in the barrel. Due to this me wife started to wear or damage the the key
on my 15000km service i asked the vw people to have a look at it and what they did i dont know but its fixed.. What i did notice is that there were a lot of grease like matter on the key when i took it out of the barrel in the first days
    after that.
Maybe its a lubrication problem of some sort. Car's got 28000km on now an no prob since

Bloody hell, so it wasn't my imagination afterall?

I've also got a Golf, so I just assumed I had put in the wrong key :/

pretty common across the board, i think the whole range must use a very similar barrel/lock

I have been having the same problem on my UK model SEAT Ibiza 6J (same chassis as the 6R Polo). It is highly annoying and embarrassing! My warranty has ran out so don't think I'll bother getting the dealer to look but I think its a fairly common complaint.
