Next mod: TIP?

hi all,

Currently I've got PD160, K&N panel filter and APR stage 1 tune (and lemmiwinks 6 degrees ignition timing advance). The car pulls pretty well from 2,500RPM to about 5,000RPM, then it runs out of puff, just wondering if it will be worthwhile to get a TIP? How much gain should I expect?

Found this on ebay, it seems pretty cheap:

I have similar mods to yourself and was thinking of doing it, from what I read its a total pain in the ass to install and the change noticed is a more linear power curve.

Some people wished they didn't do it.. Anyone whose done it care to comment?

In my opinion and a few other people would probably agree that you'd be best going for FMIC next, then a 2.5" DP and then the TIP - I have the forge TIP - absolute bitch to install - I didn't believe everyone when they said it, but it was a nightmare, that ebay link looks very similar, if it definitely fits then it's a very good price. Just give yourself a lot of time to do it and read everyone's install instructions to get some tips - no pun intended. If you're looking for gains then you need to ditch the stock intercooler - because that running out of puff is probably more heatsoak from the turbo spinning so fast.

I would recommend the TIP to everybody. I have 1 and have no issues right up to the rev-limiter cut-out ..... whilst a PITA to fit its definitely worth it from a performance perspective.

Agree with Sharkie here.

Flow is restricted with the OEM TIP and it collapses on a tuned car at WOT robbing you of power. Going a Forge TIP will increase flow "slightly" but will not collapse which is what Sharkie is referring to when he says the power band will continue in the higher RPM range with an upgraded TIP. Latest dyno comparisons made by Bill at Badger 5 in the UK show a 20hp atw gain by going to an even larger ID TIP on an ko3s hybrid turbo setup. 80mm all the way through iirc.

And I have felt the ebay jobs and they are a lot softer than the Forge TIP so don't be surprised if they also have a tendency to collapse.

Mine goes ok on rubber TIPs.

I have always had silicon ones until now though. I will be getting that ebay one next week, to modify it and fit to the Frankenturbo.

At the end of the day don't forget that the K03s isn't that big a turbo.

I'd probably go with a downpipe before intercooler but it depends on your ultimate budget, things get out of hand just read my thread about that.........

Mine with similar mods and the TIP pulled quite nicely to say 5700/5800, though beyond that it was running out of breath pretty quickly. As already suggested, that feeling is likely to be heatsoak oriented and some boost drop. With SeatSport FMIC, it's smoother, doesn't drop off as quickly, though I rarely rev it out on the street, and track I usually shift 6-6200 as I've found that to be optimal. I am referring to 3rd and 4th gear, 2nd will run to red line without a noticable drop.

Can yet comment on the dump pipe as I haven't done it. Though my opinion is that I'd still do it in the same order as I have.

Ever thought of installing a forge DV? Might hold boost a little better? Very easy to install as well, unlike the TIP, $68 soon becomes $680 after you give up and pay someone to install it lol.

Also does you EPC light "confirm" your selection when you change program's on APR? It's supposed too but mine doesn't.
