to the OP, you are not in a $500,000 exotic supercar, you're in a sub $30K entry level VW hatchback, you can't expect them to be perfect.
even lambo's, rolls' and maserati's can have thier problems.....nothing is invincible!
your car has been fine, thats good news, however it's only a couple of years old now so that's nothing exceptional. my mate has a 2001 lancer that he drove off the showroom floor, has modded and thrashed it ever since and has never had an issue. i call that luck but it proves that babying your car has no real benefit.
by the way you describe your driving style and sensitivity with the car, can i ask why you on earth you bought a GTI?? these are cars to be enjoyed and it certainly sounds like you've never done that. have you ever been on boost?
"what!! my car has a turbo?"
who cares about the extra $2-3K you might get over us at resale because you babied your car. i will be more than happy to sell mine for less than yours because at least i've had an absolute cracker of a time driving it and really made it a part of my lifestyle and not leaving it in the garage!

No George ... not locking the thread ... (think this one has some value) ... just a casual observation here ... we're here for a good time ... not a long time ... and ... from my perspective (being older than most on here) ... it is generally only those over 40 that either fear the future ("I might loose money on xxx trade or yyy buy/sell/exchange") or go the other way and decide that life is for living ... not protecting what you think you've got ... because you most assuredly are NOT taking it with you ... so enjoy it NOW!

Ahhhh, ok then. I get you now.
I just don't get why you get a car and not drive it. Even if you have a company car with a fuel card, why wouldn't you just get rid of the personal car and rely on the company car instead??
If I had any one of my dream cars(Porsche 993 911 GT2, 997 911 GT3RS, Noble M400, AMG SL65 Black V12TT), i would drive it every day, and enjoy it. Like I have said earlier, I have no problems with resale value(or lack thereof).
Oh yeah, I would modify these too, and point them at my most enjoyable piece of windy road, and promptly park it in a cliff face!!!

hahha,,,good onya dave...
I bought my vr6 off the showroom floor with 20kms on the clock.thrashed it from day one,had it till 120000kms and the only thing thate failed was the alternator and the water pump.(GB was a issue from new and was repaired under warrenty).
that car didnt know revs under 5000rpm!had every mod I could think of and when I sold it I lost the value of those mods, but I enjoyed every day I owned that car....
would it have been better to baby it? and not enjoy the ferosity of a vr6? people still remember that car and the sound it made.
