Thread: How Does Mark VI GTI Compare with Mark V

I tested both the mk5 and mk6 dsg yesterday, i must say even though the difference is not that big there is a difference.

In my opinion, the mk6 is a slightly better drive, the brakes aren't as sensitive and the ride seem to be slightly smoother. On the performance side, you can't really tell the difference at all.

In my opinion choosing mk5 or mk6 is based on your personal preference on exterior and interior.

Exterior is a personal choice really, personally i like the mk5 more.

Interior, the mk6 is slightly better, especially with the touch screen audio system (which is not great to use, but looks better). The steering well look more modern, but overall it is just personal preference.

In my opinion, the mk6 is more of a facelift than a "new generation"

I'm looking for one myself, if i can find a decent mk5 with low kms and 08 or 09, i would definitely go for that one, but if not i guess i have to go and get a brand new mk6.

That's not your opinion, it is fact! The MK6 was always an extensive facelift of the MKV. VW nor anyone else who knows what they're talking about has ever said anything differently

Where did VAG or VGA write that it was merely a facelift?

(And thanks for contributing to having my work on the tariffs deleted - what was that BS about links to Tax and Customs as if they added anything to the post?

Obviously deleted by a moderator who also did not understand the post.)

How the dummies revel in their ignorance.

The interior on the MK6 is a bit more refined, i like the speaker placement a lot more than the MK5. The newer touch screen (RCD510) looks a hundred times better than the older 6CD (RCD500), just have to get used to holding your hand steady when moving with all touch screens.

It's definitely worth looking into, could save yourself a lot to get essentially the same thing, and avoid the depreciation hit as soon as you drive it off the lot. Should be able to find some good low km ones around. Newer always seems better with most stuff.

It's pretty obvious it is, the body shape is almost the same bar head/tail lights, most of the parts underneath and inside would be the same too. It may be a bit more than a facelift but not a new model IMO.

Notice that the MK5 vs MK4 look a lot more different than the MK6 vs MK5!

They're definitely out there. I picked up a 5 Door MKV Pirelli about 2 weeks ago with 7500ks on the clock. Just keep an eye on carsales and jump when you see the right thing.

A Pirelli for 40-45k would be a good proposition, there's one at Highway but they want 50k (demo/already registered too) haha.

But Coreying said VGA said it was merely a facelift. I read no such thing and I believe quite a different view was expressed by VGA and VAG. It as a NEW Golf, not merely an update.

Mark III and IV looked pretty similar too when not side by side. Were they just a facelift too?

Why allow bull**** to be passed off as fact?.

When a car company states an all new model - it usually involved a new design from scratch, floor plan, chassis etc.

IMO the MK6 is a face lift - an extensive one however. To each their own.

I merely used the word facelift because the previous poster had. Why the need to be so sensitive and pedantic?! (Not you G-rig).

VW have said many times that the purpose of the MK6 was to streamline the production of the car so that it didn't take so long to build. The Golf is their highest volume car, and the time it took to build each MKV meant they were making hardly any profit on each car. The MK6 was therefore a 'retooling', if you want to use that as a better word than 'facelift' of the MKV.

Don't get me wrong - they took they obviously took the opportunity to improve many things besides just making the car much faster to produce.

There are no press releases from VW that I'm aware of which specifically state that the MK6 was created for this stream lining of production purpose. However, it is common knowledge. If you look back articles around the initial release of the Golf MK6, even for example the Fifth Gear piece on TV at the time, VW explained to the press that this streamlining of production was a significant reason for the update, and hence why the MK6 wasn't a completely new car.

This is also why the MK6 still has MKV VIN details etc. It's also why no new Audi A3 came at the same time (being same platform and all, the A3 and Golf are developed simultaneously.
