    handbrake problem

    Hi all,

I have a problem with the handbrake in my GTI- the release button does not extend out from the end of the handle when the handbrake is on.- I find it often is retracted into the handle when I have to release it, making it difficult to release. My car is fairly new but I bought it second-hand and it always does this for me. I didn't have a problem with my 118TSI. Whether I push it in or not push it in when I apply it makes no difference to its final position. Any ideas?

Sounds like the little spring or something is stuck for the release button. Just take it back to VW and they will either fix it or source a new part.

Sounds like the cover over the handbrake lever has slid forward.

Slide it rearward, and the button should reappear. There's a tab on the underside of the cover that locates it in the lever. This may not be retaining the cover in the correct position anymore.

Thanks Umai- that is exactly what happened as I found when fiddling with it in traffic this morning! It won't 'lock' back and keeps sliding forward however... a little annoying.

Is the car still under warranty? Maybe bring it into VW dealer to sus it out?

if you look at the underside of the grip, there is probably a tab similar to earlier model, this locks it in place, its probably bent out of shape or broken
