    The noise is "engineered"

I'm surprised that no has mentioned that the GTI has engineered acceleration noise built into it.

There is a noise pipe that has an opening down by the turbo, and goes up over the side of the engine through a vacuum actuated valve, and into the cabin.

You can disable the noise by either removing the open signal to the valve or removing the tube all together and replacing the firewall gasket with one from a regular golf.

Here is a picture of the block off gasket looks like:

Pull out the noise pipe, plug the firewall with this gasket, and enjoy quiet motoring.

Here is what all of the pipe parts look like:

Unfortunately its a US only thing, the AUS spec cars dont have a "noise pipe"

The new RSC exhaust gets the noise you want!

I'll have to check out one of these RSC exhausts when I get my R (if VWA bring in 3 door models that is).

Yeah never knew that either. The GTI I drove had a nice deep note for a standard car which I liked.

I'll be checking out the RSC exhaust down the track once I've received my car. Would love to hear one in person, youtube videos can only tell you so much.
