    Oh, come on! As if VWs never break down, never rattle and last 4 generations. Not what I learn reading this forum though...
    I'd say open your eyes and stop believing in stereotypes. You'd be much better off I reckon.

    The RS 250 is indeed a French car, probably that's why it looks so good.

    Thats all they are, naieve stereotypes!

    My brothers ClioSport 172 is a weapon, steering feedback, torsional rigidity of the chassis and that angry engine... the thing is a genuine drivers car! Sadly I must admit that I enjoy driving that through the twistys far more than my GTI and it has been strong and reliable also.

    And the Meganes are bloody fantastic too.... very close call between the 250 and the R as to which would be most pleasing to own.

    I don't normally post here, as I hang out at OzRS.

    But seriously guys... it's got to stop. You guys are sooo butthurt because your precious Golf R didn't achieve perfect 0-100/0-400, and that it wasn't the DSG model.

    WHY? No really... why? Do you really care for tenths of a second?

    Personally figures mean very little to me. I don't launch-control from the lights every day, and I don't flat shift everywhere. So it's meaningless. In gear times are slightly more meaningful, but hardly tell you how a car drives.

    I drive a Clio 182, and it has **** all torque (no really, it has ZERO torque) and it's power is all at the top end. It rattles, it's got a bit of a balky shift, it's suspension is a bit crashy, it costs a fortune for servicing, and well... it's French. But it's generally regarded as one of the most fun vehicles on the road today. My 205 GTI was all of those points above times about 3. Yet it was even more fun, and the driving experience was phenomenal.

    My point is, try and judge a car subjectively rather then objectively. Forget peak G's, slalom times, 0-100 and braking performance. They are pub-talk material. Instead judge a car on how it makes you feel, what emotion it inspires when you drive it in anger, when you drive it sedately, and everything inbetween. Personally a Golf R does nothing for me (and I owned and loved a Golf MK5), but if I did like it, disappointing figures would do nothing to sway my opinion.

    Anyway, /endrant. Hope to see you guys at the Euro Meet #3 (can't make #2 as overseas)

    Depends what sort of driver you are really, as to which is the better car, Me personally I loved my MY04 Club Spec 7 WRX, at the time I thought that was a weapon, but now I look back on it...it was typical Subaru with the average plastics on the inside, it was all about the drive and that's it, The clio after seeing one here at the dealer was the same. It didn't hold a candle to the R for interior aesthetics.

    For me the R is the Tourer of the bunch, quick enough, and more refined than the other two put together, and if I want to start smoking it up I go down to APR, shell out $1499 and dust both of these cars.

    It would be interesting to see if the Clio is chippable and still driveable - ie not suffering from wheelspin

    Wash your mouth out please, and drive a Renault Sport vehicle. They are a revelation to drive if maybe not as comfortable and well equipped as a VW.

    Excellent point. I wanted a car that was more cruiser than a full on sports car. That's the R and the S3.

    Test drove the Megane and it is cracking, but not what I am after in a car at this point in time.

    I'm actually tossing about between a Clio 182 and a Pug GTi-6 as a track toy at the moment. They really are great little cars.

    If people are that blinkered by badge it is a bit sad.

    As another member of the French car club, albeit a lowly 138 hp Peugeot 206 GTi, I have to agree. Compared to most cars, the Golf GTI turns in very well, but it doesn't turn in as well or feel as good doing it as mine does. Depreciation can work for you. I picked mine up with less than 30k on the clock, less than 3 years old for about half the new ORC. It has needed nothing more than routine maintainence (although a new clutch at 80k might be excessive) and at 7+ years old, I intend on keeping it for another 2 years at least.

    So will someone buy a Megane RS so I can get it for $24K in 2013?
