Sydney Morning Herald team says the Golf R will be detuned for Australia (to 188kw from 199kw).

Theoretically, wouldn't it be better if the car used the full monty tune most as appropriate (at night, cool days, in Tasmania) and reverted to the 'careful' tune on 38deg+ days?

They probably did that to safeguard the Audi S3 sales instead of the claimed heat issue.

Note they say Leather Sports seats.. not regular seats. I think that is in reference to the Recaro's.

I would still expect Leather and Bi-Xenon to be standard.

I expected them to do this with the power rating. No way they'd cannibalize the S3 and have the R as powerful as the TT-S.

Nothing a quick ecu reprogram can't fix though

Almost all owners would be doing that mod anyway as it is the best bang-for-buck performance mod you can do.

    Drag Race: Golf R -v- Sirocco R

The youtube link is from Japan showing a timed 0-400m drag race between the Golf R -v- Sirocco R.

    YouTube - Scirocco R vs Golf R 0-400M

The Audi TT-RS 0-400m acceleration time is thrown in for good measure.

    Cheers.

Below is a Dutch review with English subtitles available. Looks like the Golf R, like the R32, is quick to shift into top gear for the sake of economy. Also blunts the everyday driving experience around town, esp when looking to jump into that elusive shrinking gap in the neighbouring lane.

The second link is the entire Japanese 400m test runs, which includes a few Subaru STI's and a couple of Mitsubishi Lancer EVO's. The Audi TT-RS also seems difficult to launch with it clearly evident that it bogs down after initial launch.

My GTI is sitting at Port Kembla atm. Although I lament not driving the Golf R or being able to conduct a short back to back run re: Golf R -v- GTI. I'm still keen on the GTI for its attractive price, leaner weight, agility, XDS, DCC, economy, looks and fun factor. The Golf R should have better resale value & be easier to sell down the track. My neighbour who owns an MKV R32 is of the opinion that the Golf R is not a step far enough ahead over the MKV R32; He's looking at downgrading to a fully kitted (or thereabouts) GTI pending a test drive in the Golf R - Audi A5 Coupe (diesel & 2.0 TSI) - Golf GTI.

    Cheers.

More like they probably did it for the same reasons as Audi given its the same engine. I agree it seems like a load of cobblers, but perhaps there is actually something to it???
