Yeah the most closely guarded secrets in the car industry is what the manufacturer sells the vehicles to the dealer for, cant say what the difference would be but I'm pretty sure that they always make some level of profit on a sale as you said otherwise they'd go bust.

i believe the dealers buy the stock from the manufacturer at wholesale prices and then sell them at retail price like any other business. also i believe VW pays the dealers a commission on each unit moved so even if the dealer sells a car at zero profit they still get some cash and come out on top.

also, i think a ship comes to aus every four months, its not like a ship comes over every week so of course the cars r sent in batches of whatever has been built in the four months since the last ship. however if they dont have enough cars to send to make it worthwhile, say the ship would be half empty, they'd just skip a shipment and send it with the next one meaning australia might not receive a shipment for 8 months since the last ..i believe this happened once last year.

as for wdong, i dont think what he did was such a bad thing. the glen waverly people stuffed him around so when he went for some lunch and had a chance to ponder he decided to give some1 else a go, i wouldve done the same thing ..although i wouldve walked out long before any yelling or table thumping, ive walked in and walked straight out of dealerships because i didnt feel like i wanted to deal with any of the people there. im not rich by any means but i care just as much about who i give my money to as how much i give and the two r directly related. posting his price here, i dont know ..i think his point was dont forget to check out south yarra before u buy. good luck with ur car and wedding wdong

Umm yeah.... wholesale is a given however the secret is what is that wholesale price? Most items of supply you can obtain informaiton as to what the wholesale is but I cant say I ever heard what wholesale on a vehicle from any manufacturer is. Thus the secret.. If RRP of a 4 dr DSG is what 42990 wholesale could be anything from say 25K to 40k landed, if its closer to the latter then its easy to understand a dealer not wishing to go lower, but I doubt very much the margin on a VW is as low as 2-3k, you're probably looking at a landed cost of around 30-35K per unit to make the business sustainable and even then they arent going to get rich with those sorts of margins

As for the supply chain well we could talk for hours about that function, forecasting, sparing analysis etc etc etc as its part of my job to design and analyse those hugely exciting things, but when it comes to moving volume of units they would start with a small taster for the new model as they have done and then assess the market based on new orders and then ship a small percentage of additional units for demo's/those customers who walk in and walk out with a vehicle. The majority of this sort of business however would be based on orders and given the cost of shipping is pretty high for sea cargo, especially for vehicle I'd say, then I would assume that there is a minimum number of overall units that they require across the board prior to making a shipment to Aus, this may combine other builds across the VW group, however probably not, and may or may not include shipping some of the units to NZ. Lots of variables to take into consideration...

As for the origins of this thread, he got a good deal, not a world shattering one though 12% or there abouts is good, I got around that to walk out with existing stock 2 weeks after release of the GTI. Good for him, he'll love the car, and I'm sure all will be forgiven/forgotted when he uses the dealer for service work etc.

Dealers buy from VWA not VAG. It's the importers job to deal with the dealers. If they get a commission they haven't sold a car at zero profit, the cost of a car to the dealer would be their cost price taking into account commissions plus a percentage for running costs. Salesmen would know that when they hit that cost they will get SFA commission.

A ship is arriving around every 10 days, you can see all the ships that comes to Australia from a few of the tracking websites. The ship stops in many countries along the way and not just Australia and also carries other VAG cars.

There is no way that Australia could go 8 months without a shipment, that would effectively mean the end of all VAG products in the country!

In 2009 VWA sold just over 30,000 cars in total according to VFACTS, so that means 580 cars a week are sold. Ships would have to arrive pretty frequently as you need to have display floor stock, demo cars for test rides, stock coming in and in transit, and cars being built as you order.

So ships arriving every 10-14 days or so sounds about right on the money there.

Its a cycle and the VWA HEAD stock controllers job is to juggle supply and demand on all models to make the dealer network happy.

thank you Rikard1, i will remove my price after this post, my purpose is that, if you really want to get a good price for your car, you have to had some serious research! i did lots pricing research here, and even dealers, what i found is, most vw dealer are too big, owns by few large companies, but some dealer such as South Yarra, own by a local couple, so that, i think they are keen to a sale, does not like glen waverley, they are no. 1 in australia, they dont mind to lose a sale, too hard to bargain, but! i found lots low price came from glen waverley! so i decide give it a try, then go to south yarra! im not a rush buyer, i did my research for 3 weeks and get my confidence to neg with a dealer. just because your guys' price helped me, then i want share my price to the ppl who prepare to buy. buying a car is a big thing, especially for this GTI, nearly 500k, of course i have to make the best money saving deal, i think every ppl would do the same thing as me, will you ignore the potential possiable 2k dollar down if you heard about some dealers can deal with you?!

Hey Wdong, dont think you need to worry, this place fires up occasion dont take it to heart most of the ppl here are genuinely nice, as for the price there is actually a price thread (well a couple) and spreadsheet and a number of people have posted their purchase prices to help people out, so I wouldn't be too bothered about taking yours down.

Now you just have the agonising wait for the car to arrive.

I'd prefer to go through life being nice to people and have them show me the same respect. At the end of the day, most people will negotiate with the dealer for the lowest price both parties are comfortable with - and they won't pay more than they can afford. Only the truly stingy or arrogant will try to squeeze every last cent out of a stone regardless of how they act.
Agree completely!! I have found, if you treat people nice and fair, they are more inclined to help you and go out of their way to please you.

Just to rub it in, I got my Pirelli for $46,000 driveway which is faster and more powerful than your new GTI

Signing a contract to buy a car that you have to wait 4 months to collect is a bit like like buying an Option. It has two components, its intrinsic value and its time value. The time value represents a discount. I would never disclose my purhcase price until my MK6 was signed, sealed and delivered. As they say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Incidentally I had no joy with South Yarra VW and had got an exceptional price from Glenn Waverley VW for a TSI118, so South Yarra is not the panacea. One brief phone call and I had the car within 7 days. Last time I looked it was pretty much the best price on the spreadsheet except for one other buyer that had a long delivery wait..
