ASR cutting in, followed by a loud bang! Normal

    Chaps

When I'm in my manual GTi, and lets say it's on a damp road, uphill,a nd you pull away with some small amounts of enthusiasm, I can feel the traction control cutting in, but sometimes, its followed by a loud bang, or thunk from under the car. Almost as if the traction control is switching off, and the diff just reacted.

Not experienced this on other cars, and my description may not be great, but is this normal for your cars, and should I just be reacting to the ASR by backing off the gas?

Just keen to understand other experiences. Thanks

Are you talking about axle tramp? or the tyres bouncing and causing shuddering?

It will be axle tramp. Certainly not the tyres bouncing or shuddering, which I am familiar with. Cause for concern or just me playing too hard?

Axle tramp is part and parcel with most fwd cars. Just lay off the loud pedal when slippery!

Thanks - never had it with my last car (Focus ST/XR5) which even when Bluefinned never got to that stage. I suspect it just seems to manifest itself more in the Golf than the Focus. Both blinding good cars - just one more raw, one more refined... thanks both.

Do you have Dunlop or Bridgestones on your car?

118TSI - wheels spinning creates violent noisy shudder

I was wondering about this bizarre symptom with my otherwise excellent Golf Mk6.

When accelerating from a standstill in the wet, or uphill, I can get a fair bit of wheel spin for 3 or 4 seconds until the car moves smoothly and traction control kicks in... nothing unusual there.

But what bothers me is that the entire cabin sounds like a bloody noisy drum while this happens.

Its as if the car is driving across an unsealed road at high speed and sounds like it would shake itself to bits.

I don't know if its my tyres (Pirellis) or the suspension, but I have a stock standard 118TSI DSG for a year now and its always behaved like this.

Should I take it to dealer ? Anyone else have this ?

Ease up on the throttle, always happens if you give it a little too much of the go pedal

    Hi,

If that noise occurs only when the wheels are spinning it could be axel tramping, quite common in front wheel drives.

The abs (also used for traction control these days) could also be making the noise which is also nothing to worry about.

Your tyres definately have an effect as it defend on the level of grip that they provide.

    Hope this helps.
