Ok...you can change my no to a yes on the poll....

Didn't notice it until now (2100kms). Going through a tunnel this morning and I could hear the chirp. On the way home I tested when it was happening as best as I could in traffic. Seems to happen as soon as I touch the accelerator when in D7 at 1200-1800 revs........

Edit....you would not believe VW were on the phone as soon as I sent this congratulating me on buying a Golf and they would be sending me a welcome pack and magazines.......

Yes, went to Mascot and they were the ones who told me that VW were working on a fix. They said they hoped to contact all those car owners who had reported the issue to bring in their car for the fix when the fix is ready.

They said that there was nothing else they could do for the time being. I mentioned the fact that a few ppl had either replaced the water pump or had the supercharger clutch cleaned with pressure air & lubricated and they advised against it. The clutch plates are meant to be high friction surfaces.

Took the car to Mascot yesterday.....tech said yep...that's the noise.

There was a car in before me with the same issue. No news on a fix yet.....

So as someone who hasn't yet bought a Golf 6, but who wants to get a 118 when I can afford it - would any current 118 owner advise I avoid the car because of this problem, or is the message it's tolerable assuming the root cause is resolved eventually?
I could be persuaded to go down the TDI path, albeit at yet more cost.

The poll is interestering - is it really the case that the majority of these cars will develop this after 5,000km. I can't find much evidence on the internet of this problem in Europe or in VW outputs (the latter I can understand if there is no fix known). I've read through the threads in this forum and vwaudi for example.

the sound is there, but whether it "drives you up the wall" is really a personal thing. for myself, i know it's there and sometimes i hear it, but most of the time ,y music is louder than the sound anyway. i would not say you should avoid it, but then again, i don't know what levels of tolerance for annoyance you have... this is not a real problem whereby the engine loses power, it is just a sound...

I am with thamwk on this one....I am confident the issue will be resolved. I have done 2300kms and love the car! Music is up most of the time and I don't notice it at all.....slightly annoying when you do but I can live with it for the moment....

How often would you say it comes on? Every few secs, once or twice a min, every time it changes gear or every time it crosses a certain rev? I'm still waiting for a fix before I put my money down.

Happens everytime the supercharges engages for me (so when u step on the accelerator between 1-2.5k rpm)

Frequency i guess is equivalent to how often you press the accelerator.

Doesnt seem to happen when taking off from stationary though.

Ah well, just a reminder that u'r crossing the 2k threshold, like a speed limit chime.

Agree with Kelvin not much discussion in UK forums. Maybe fewer 118s are sold over there compared with other models.
