View Full Version : Difference between Golf GTI & Audi S3 engines - mechanically speaking???
Speed

In standard form my golf puts out 110kw. Chipped it's somewhere around 150kw.
Yet an Audi S3 of the same year puts out 150kw and chipped to 200kw.
I thought that they were basically the same 1.8 audi motor.
What are the differences? rods, pistons, turbo???
Cheers,
Steve
The s3 has a K04 turbo compared to the gti k03. The s3 also has a 3 inch maf and bigger injectors

Thank you Njay, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
So my GTI could have 200kw, if I upgraded to a K04, bigger injectors and MAF. Bring that on!
For some reason I thought that there could be differences in the head & cams too?

you should go for frakenturbo like lito should be good for around 160-170 atw
FrankenTurbo | F4 Hybrid Turbocharger for Transversal 1.8T (http://www.frankenturbo.com/new/F4T.html)
or you can man up and get the F23 like me and hit 200+atw with forged internals
FrankenTurbo | F23 Hybrid K04 turbo for Audi TT225, S3 & MkIV cars (http://www.frankenturbo.com/new/F23.html)
For headwork im just getting bigger bored pistons and leaving valves stock should be fine for 300bhp. Cams are not really necessary for k04 and for such a small engine. Two mechanics i talked to who said dont bother with cams on the 1.8T

it might be cheaper to buy a whole S3 engine from a wreckers than to rebuild

Maybe, but since the extra power comes from bolt on mods, I don't see why I'd need to.
I'd always rather rebuild my engine than replace with something from a wreckers with no history.
I do appreciate the suggestion,
Cheers!

I reckon I'd be pretty stoked with 160-170 atw once I had a lightened flywheel.
If I had 4mo/quattro, then yes I'd want the F23 with forged internals.
Thanks heaps for the info, I had NFI.

If you want easy swap, near K04 performance...You need to find someone with a K03S turbo for sale :P

Subtle. hahaha.
What sort of power will a k03s give me?
I'm guessing its a lot less than a k04 with larger injectors but figure the k03s might work ok with my current tune.

It's about 20bhp straight swap - basically there's a press release from Borg Warner stating that the K03 is limited to 195bhp, the K03S 215bhp and the K04 is 220bhp or 225bhp can't remember. But in terms of price and ease of swap the K03S is definitely bang for buck, because you use existing hardware rather than changing other components like you do when you introduce the K04.

It'll need software too obviously. The K04 can be run on standard hardware, with the right tune but it won't be making power like it could.

Understood. What sort of money shoud I put aside for a custom code and is there a specific year model that they work from? I recall APR telling me that they couldn't do a 1997 A4 1.8T (They said it had to be after 1998.) Is this the same for custom code?
My wife may inherit my gti whilst I shop for a 4mo/quattro alternative, thats why Im asking about the years.
Cheers!
