Heaps of threads out there answering that exactly question. Basically you want a manual, you want the heater, ac and all windows to work, you don't want to hear a sort of "marbles in a can" sounding rattle coming from the engine, if it has over 150-200kkm it should have had the timing chain done, if not you'll need to have it done yourself and it's not cheap. Make sure clutch isn't slipping and all gears are fine, including reverse.

Make sure it drugs nice, no funny squeaks or knocks etc, and look for any clues that may suggest its been crashed.

Im actually looking at a manual one at the moment too. The central locking and windows dont work. I already have an auto so it's a cheap as **** one anyway.

If the windows and central locking dont work might this suggest of any bigger issues (electrics wise)

It has no service history, no receipts and looks like its been kinda thrashed.

    But yolo..,..

Damn. Would've been good to but definitely next time! And thanks! It'll all be looking super clean, super soon (by christmas); wheels and all - then the fun begins with the tiny mods here and there.

And Touareg parked near the sausage sizzle? The red 323 was pretty sweet despite its stock-ness and lack of love

Yeah, could be something simple to fix if they're all not working, but could also be a massive pain in the ass to fix. Electrical issues suck. Have spent too much time trying to sort them all out on my bmw, have rewired most of it completely... and still have lots to fix
