Supercheap have 5L Castrol Edge 5w30 VW 504/507 spec for $63...any good, or better to spend more on something like the Liqui Moly?

What are your thoughts on Sakura oil filters?

The oil is fine, but the filter is garbage. The O-ring is not thick enough and will cause the cap on the oil filter housing to leak. Plus, more often than not, the filter will probably collapse over time.

Try and avoid brands like Ryco, Wesfil and Sakura on these. They're crap.

A genuine filter for these - 071115562C is only $25. Alternatively, OEM brands like Hengst, Mahle, and MANN are decent too, and are a little cheaper.

I was using the 5w-30 Castrol 507 dealer approved oil (change twice a year for 3.5 years) and found that it would drink the oil. Around 1L per 2500-3000km. I also found my Renault ClioSport would drink Castrol oil whereas when I ran Elf it didn't consume any (10,000km changes)

I recently (one change 5,600km) switched to Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200 and it has used only100mL in 5,000km

Wonder if this has been the experience for others?

It varies from model to model.
I also have great experiences with Elf/Total oils.

    Thanks for that advice.
I bought a couple of Sakura filters a year ago and used one at the time and have just changed the oil using another.
When I took the filter out I noticed that the 'fins' were twisted, but was told by someone that this is normal due to the pressure exerted by the oil.
I was skeptical about this, and it seems l should have been moreso!

4100 Liquid Moly appears to only be in 5W-40? This is fine for Skoda Octavia RS 2012 TSI Manual and won't void warranty even though it's not VW 504/507?

You can run 502/505 in a petrol engine yes Using a non approved oil of the correct spec may not void your warranty but may upset VW if you have an engine claim.

I don't have 100% confirmation from VW Aus, but I believe the 502/505-spec 5W-40 oils are ok in the petrol engines.

Liqui Moly Toptec 4100 is 502/505-approved, as is Penrite HPR-5.
