My son has an 08 DSG r32, and for the first time since he's owned it, he took off with his foot flat to the floor, which resulted in the car surging or breaking down in the upper rev range....
try and get an 08, as they don't have the sticky/fading dashboard controls, and has the upgraded canbus system

As above, you can pick up a new genuine compressor for $600/650 here in Brisbane. Fairly simple to replace if your half handy, just the re-gas obviously needs to be done by a tech.
as mentioned, they are prone to failure, identical ones can be purchased new for around $600
can't help with the rattle, but it won't be a noisy chain, as they use a belt. Have had an 06 gti, an 06 jetta and an audi a4 in the family, all with the same engine, and they all had the same rattle...
if it's the same engine as the mk5 GTI, they have a history of high oil consumption, as apparently they have soft rings. My son had one with only 60k on the clock, and same as you, he had to top it...
My brother had a black manual 2 door about 5 years ago, still got close to 30k when he sold it. don't see too many blacks either!
