my update:
1. half day spent trying to remove the key cylinder from the barrel
used these 2 videos as reference but I just can't do it!

22 on the diagram is wiring harness adapter, are you certain it wasnt that number 14 (lock cylinder) part you had to replace?

sounds like a fair amount of hassle. Good that you managed to pull the key out in the end. Are you looking to replace the lock cylinder? cos if yes, it means reprogramming or getting it...
