On paper, the 2.5TDI and the 350TSI have similar fuel consumptions around town (and I suspect similar under load as well). I totally agree that there are heaps of TSI/TFSI engines...

The thing that now attracts me to the 350TSI is the (advertised) maximum torque range of 1500-4000 rpm.

I am assuming that this range of maximum torque will help more in towing a caravan better...

I have driven a 2.5TDI with the Oettinger re-map in a manual 4Motion crewman, and it is very nice!

Unfortunately, Oettinger doesn't do one for the 340TDI. So I've been considering the 350TSI,...
