Error Code P0087

Hey guys, I'm having issues with my 09 Octavia VRS petrol and was hoping someone else has had a similar issue before. I've had code P0087 come up when I scan the car which is "Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low". Looking up the interwebz says that there can be multiple causes including high pressure fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor, fuel filter. So far I have replaced the fuel filter and the high pressure fuel sensor. Before I replace the high pressure fuel pump I was hoping someone could confirm I am going in the right direction.
Basically the car has gone into limp mode with multiple cylinder misfires. There is a ton of smoke coming out of the exhaust from unburnt fuel, infact fuel is dripping out from all of the exhaust joints, there is that much unburnt fuel going through the system. The spark plugs are all new. Does the high pressure fuel pump look like the next step. Has anyone had something similar happen? Thanks in advance.

I have had the sensor go ontop of the hpfp I can't for the life of me remember what the fault code was though. The hpfp is about $500 from memory.

Can't help with an answer but you'd be better off asking in one of the other areas as it's the same engine as a golf/passat, etc

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I've researched the crap out of it but I can't find similar symptoms. The general consensus seems to be that dealers/mechanics can't really diagnose it any better. Irritates the **** out of me buying an expensive part to replace something you're not sure is even broken. Missing my Skoda at the moment. Thanks for the link Gavin.

There is a fuel rail valve that hasn't been mentioned. Luckily these are pretty cheap. The downside is that they are a pain to change (located under the inlet manifold).

I thought that fuel rail valve is an FSI thing. In fact most of the information I'm getting is more relevant to the FSI rather than the TSI.

Id be very surprised if the TSI engine didnt have one. In fact ill check my GTI in the morning.

There you go....theres your fuel rail valve. I recon thats your problem right there. Not a common failure, but ive read of a few of them playing up.

Thanks for the pic Lucas. Went and looked at my engine and I have the same valve. Oddly enough while researching the fuel rail valve to see if it is the issue I came across the symptoms of stuck open injectors which sounds very similar to what I am experiencing. Unfortunately I just went and ordered a hpfp from a vw dealer today at $560 and when I rang them up an hour later to cancel they said they couldn't. I'll try again when I go to pick it up tomorrow but at the moment this is proving to be a very expensive exercise. At this stage I might give the self diagnosis a miss and just take it to Essendon Skoda. I'll have to fork out for the tow as well which sucks and I'm sure the final bill won't be cheap. As much as I love my car I'm beginning to regret buying a Skoda at this stage. The parts prices are beyond belief.

I can't work out why you are going to a dealer. Why not a specialist independant VW workshop? There's a few good ones down in MEL.

I very much doubt (although not impossible of course) that your HPFP has failed. There is nothing to them, they are so simple. A stuck injector or blocked injector is possible though.

How many km's has your engine done? Ever done a carbon clean?

Yeah I know you can get cheaper overseas but then you have at least a minimum weeks postage time and that's if you're lucky. My car is completely undrivable at the moment. As far as the independents go, I would love to have an independent out in the West but there just aren't any. I've had the car about 10 months now and it was serviced by an independent before so I'm not sure if any recalls have been done which is why I'm thinking of taking it to a dealer.

These cars are so different compared to what I have dealt with before and there are a lot of forum posts saying that hpfp's have failed. I know that the tsi ones are stronger but there has been quite a few failures still. As well as failing fuel filters, high pressure sensors, injectors, inlet manifolds. Scary stuff and unfortunately the fault codes are very vague. My car has just hit 100,000 k's and I'm not sure if it has been cleaned before but it has had a full service history.

Service history does not cover carbon cleaning. With 100,000km it is entirely possible that your issue is carbon buildup on the valves and injector tips. When the injector tips get blocked up then the flow is compromised as you can imagine.

Carbon buildup affects ALL direct injection engines, regardless of TFSI or TSI etc.

Ok, you've convinced me I need to do a clean. Really, really don't want to though. I'm assuming this won't fix my injector issue though as it seems to be dumping excess fuel into the system by staying open, not being blocked up. How do I know which injector is screwed? Is it whichever cylinder is misfiring on the vcds scan? Thanks for your help as well, it is appreciated.

Ok, update on this. I'm over cars at the moment so I want someone else to fix it. I've booked it into Volks Affair on Monday morning. They claim they have a special bit of equipment to decarbonise the engine and it will only cost me $200 so I'd prefer to pay rather than do the work myself. He also seems to think it is unlikely to be a fuel injector so we will see when he gets back to me with the verdict. West Melbourne really needs a specialist Euro workshop.

I thought I would update this with a resolution so that anyone searching with similar issues will know. I had to get 2 fuel injectors replaced as 1 was stuck wide open and the other was dribbling fuel. Also had to get new oil because there was fuel in the oil. He also mentioned that my car with 102,000 k's was pretty gunked up and was in desperate need of a clean. So far so good but with a massive bill. Thanks to Lucas_R for all his help.

Nope no ideas. However upon some research it seems to be a common problem on the golfs in the states. Enough to warrant vw covering the injectors for a 10 year warranty over there.

Amazing how many bits & pieces carry a much bigger warranty in the USA than here. I really think we get short-changed as a long term ownership proposition.

Yeah we just don't take them to court as much, most likely why.
