I am picking up a 1976 2dr swallowtail after lunch today! My brother used to own it and sold it about 2 years ago. Here is a picture of when he used to own it. It still looks pretty much the same except needs a good clean/polish etc.

It has new window rubbers all round, new headlights, seats are in excellent condition, and an amazing dash

It had some issues like when I was driving it, it would all of a sudden lose acceleration and die. Sometimes it would start after 5 mins, sometimes after 4 hours or so :( Anyway thats all fixed...replaced carby, ignition coil, spark plugs and leads, vacuum advance unit, vacuum lines, fuel filter, cleared fuel lines and it still did it. Drained the fuel tank (which funnily enough the access cover is found on the side of the tank and not through the floorpan like most) and found the filter on the end of the line was clogged. Cleaned it up and it hasnt stopped since!
Got a letter today in the mail to say that it has to go in for a vehicle inspection as they have been informed that my car may not be in a safe or roadworthy condition due to lowered suspension, wheels/tyres not complying with regulations. I know it will not pass with coilovers in it and it doesnt have a heater box and a few other bits and pieces so I bought another mk1 to get all the pieces off! Hopefully she will pass :)
What an epic car! I really loved it when specip3 owned it and still love it! Jealous as!
As for the tank, I think the earlier ones had the access cover on the sides, and later models from the top. Could be wrong
Very early ones with the ugly rear panel also had the tanks with the side fitting,parts left over from the 1975 Euro production.As the Australian cars were assembled from tkd parts sent from Germany.The build quality was extremely poor and had lots of issues so any surviving 76 LS cars are a treasure today,so look after them.Info direct from the father in law as I wasn't even born that long ago.

And here she is ready for her inspection thismorning. Bit of rust in the passenger floor so dont know if it will pass or not...we will see! The height of the front is dreadful makes it look like a monster truck or something.

Last week picked up a 2" exhaust and extractors. Also picked up a weber 32/36 DGAV and manifold to suit 8v.

I'm not copying I promise!! I just cant help myself sometimes! Yeah cant wait to get them both on - getting rid of some surface rust on exhaust and extractors then they should be ready to go on. Interested to see how your carb goes!
Also found out on the weekend that the engine in this golf was professionally rebuilt about 65-70000ks ago.
Clutch is also starting to slip - bought a new one this morning.
